General Description
The purpose of this class is to be responsible for the operation of the most technical heavy equipment, to assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of county streets, drainage systems, beaches, and related infrastructure and participate in the supervision of a small crew.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Operates and maintains assigned equipment, including paving machine, reclaimer, dozer, all excavators, milling machine, motor graders, rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, tandem dump trucks, backhoes, and distributor trucks.
- Operate haul truck, including load, tie down, and transport of equipment.
- Surveys and measures elevation, grade, slope and integrates data with machine control instruments and equipment on drainage and road projects.
- Maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Directs and participates in roadway patching, brush cutting, and the collection and disposal of trash and brush.
- Directs and participates in beach maintenance operations.
- Transports supplies, materials, and personnel to and from work sites.
- May perform housekeeping and facilities maintenance functions.
- Flags traffic as needed.
- Maintains inventory of parts and supplies.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Requires four years of experience in road, bridge, beach, drainage systems construction or repair or closely related experience.

The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must possess and maintain a valid state class A commercial license with an acceptable driving history.
