Job Summary

Join Galena Park Police Department as a Police Dispatcher, serving as the critical link between the community, police officers, fire and emergency medical services and other public safety agencies. In this fast-paced role, you will receive, and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls, obtain and evaluate critical information, dispatch appropriate personnel, maintain radio contact with field units, operate public safety communications and criminal justice information systems, and accurately document public safety activity.

Exceptional customer service is an essential part of the position. Police Dispatchers are often the first point of contact between the Department and members of the public, frequently during stressful, confusing or emotionally charged circumstances. The ability to listen carefully, communicate with empathy and professionalism, establish rapport, manage difficult interactions, and provide clear information is essential to maintaining public confidence while supporting officers and other first responders.

This is a high-responsibility position requiring sound judgement, clear communication, attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to remain calm and effective during emergencies and rapidly changing situations. The successful candidate must be able to manage multiple communications, technology systems, and competing priorities simultaneously while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and sound judgement.

The Police Dispatcher plays a direct role in protecting the community and supporting the safety and effectiveness of Department personnel. Professionalism, compassion, accuracy, and sound judgment are expected in every interaction whether communicating with emergency caller, emergency responders, or other members of the public.

Essential Duties

  • Receive and prioritize incoming emergency and non-emergency calls using multi-line phone systems and telephony equipment
  • Utilize computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software to log incidents accurately and efficiently
  • Provide clear, concise instructions to callers, including first aid guidance, CPR instructions, or other emergency dispatch procedures
  • Coordinate response efforts by dispatching police units using radio communication systems and GPS/GIS technology for location tracking
  • Maintain detailed records of all communications, including transcription of radio transmissions and written reports
  • Manage conflict situations with calm negotiation skills while maintaining professionalism and control
  • Monitor multiple communication channels simultaneously, ensuring rapid response to evolving incidents

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate, GED or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of police dispatch procedures, radio communication systems, and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly and effectively
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which will include working all shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data entry, typing speed, and managing multi-line phone systems
  • Must be capable of being certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety in TCIC/NCIC operations
  • Ability to decipher situations quickly using analysis skills to determine appropriate responses
  • Customer service orientation with strong phone etiquette and conflict management capabilities
  • Relevant certifications such as TCOLE Basic Telecommunications Certification or law enforcement training are highly desirable
