Quality Technician

Position Summary

The Quality Technician ensures that all machined aerospace components meet stringent customer, regulatory, and AS9100 quality standards. This position performs dimensional inspections, documents results, and supports the continual improvement of quality processes within the machine shop. The role works closely with production, engineering, and management to uphold product integrity and compliance throughout the manufacturing process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct first article inspections (FAI) in accordance with AS9102 requirements and customer specifications.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measurement instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) symbols to verify dimensional conformance.
  • Ensure compliance with AS9100 and customer-specific quality management system (QMS) requirements.
  • Support the Nonconformance Report (NCR) process — identify, document, and assist in corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Maintain and verify the calibration status of gauges, fixtures, and inspection equipment in accordance with AS9100 calibration control procedures.
  • Assist in root cause analysis and participate in continuous improvement and process capability initiatives.
  • Document inspection results accurately using quality inspection software, QMS databases, or ERP systems.
  • Support internal and external audits, providing documentation and traceability as required by AS9100 and customer contracts.
  • Collaborate with machinists and engineers to resolve nonconformities and recommend process improvements to enhance product quality.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical certificate in machining, manufacturing technology, or quality assurance preferred.

Experience:
 - Minimum 2–4 years of experience in precision machining or aerospace manufacturing quality inspection.
 - Familiarity with CMM operation (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso, or equivalent) preferred.
 - Experience working in AS9100 or ISO 9001 certified environments.

Knowledge/Skills:
 - Strong understanding of GD&T, AS9102 FAI documentation, and aerospace tolerancing standards.
 - Proficiency with MS Office, and familiarity with ERP/QMS systems.
 - Strong attention to detail, analytical, and communication skills.
 - Ability to read and interpret aerospace blueprints, process sheets, and specifications.

Working Conditions

Work performed primarily in a precision machine shop environment.
 Exposure to noise, oil, and metal shavings typical of machining operations.
 Frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting (up to 30 lbs).
 Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Preferred Certifications (Not Required)

  • ASQ Certified Quality Technician (CQT) or Certified Mechanical Inspector (CMI).
  • CMM programming certification (Zeiss, Mitutoyo, or Hexagon).
  • Training or certification in root cause analysis, SPC, or 8D problem solving.
