What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer Crew - Galactic Camp 2027 position at Galactic Camp®?
About Galactic Camp
Galactic Camp® is the only furry convention on an aircraft carrier: a 3-day festival aboard the USS Hornet Air, Sea & Space Museum in Alameda, CA, returning April 30 – May 2, 2027. It's produced by Galactic Camp Corporation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, as a fundraiser for the USS Hornet Museum.
We're building our volunteer crew for 2027. When you apply, tell us which role(s) you're interested in.
Open volunteer roles
- Hospitality Director – Own the attendee experience, including overnight camping aboard the ship: berthing assignments, check-in and check-out, quiet hours, amenities, and staterooms and suites, working closely with the museum crew.
- Con Ops – Be the event's command center: coordinate staff and volunteers across the ship over radios, dispatch help where it's needed, track incidents and keep the weekend running smoothly.
- Dealers' Den Manager – Run the Dealers' Den: work with artists and vendors on applications and acceptances, assign tables, manage load-in and keep the marketplace running all weekend.
- Furry Historian – Curate the history of the USS Hornet for our community: research the ship's story, from WWII through the Apollo 11 recovery, and share it with attendees through tours, panels, signage or a scavenger-hunt tie-in.
- AV Lead – Spec, set up and run audio and video for every space: stages, DJ booths, panel rooms and screens. Coordinate rentals and load-in, and support techs through the weekend.
- Lighting Designer – Design and run lighting for the main stage, dances and event spaces, turning a hangar deck into a nightclub.
- Load Master – Plan and run the complex load-in and load-out of a ship: coordinate forklifts, the crane, deliveries, freight routing and the schedule with the museum, keeping everyone safe.
- HR Director – Build and support our volunteer crew: recruiting, onboarding, volunteer agreements, the org chart, and keeping department heads and volunteers happy and connected.
- Registration Lead – Run registration from pre-reg through badge pickup, wrangling our trusty legacy software, ConventionMaster (it's seen things), keeping the badge printers fed and happy, and keeping lines moving.
- Registration Crew – Check in attendees, print and hand out badges, and answer questions at the reg desk. Patience with vintage software and a friendly smile are a plus.
- Public Safety (F.L.A.R.E.) – Help keep everyone safe as part of F.L.A.R.E., our public safety team: patrol the ship, help attendees, respond to incidents over radio, and support fursuiters in the heat. Safety training provided.
- Fursuit Lounge Lead & Handlers – Run the fursuit lounge and help fursuiters around the ship as spotters and handlers: water, cooling, rest breaks and guiding suiters on ladders and narrow passageways.
- Photographer – Capture the weekend: group photos on the flight deck, dances, panels and candid moments for our socials, website and recap.
- Stage Manager / Main Events – Run the main stage: opening and closing ceremonies, the dance competition, performances and the main-stage schedule, keeping talent and tech on cue.
- Volunteer Coordinator – Work under HR to schedule volunteer shifts, check people in at the start of each shift, fill gaps on the fly and make sure every volunteer gets their perks.
- Social Media & Marketing – Create posts and graphics before and during the con, cover the weekend live, and help grow our community online.
- Info Desk & Con Store – Be the friendly face attendees go to first: wayfinding around the ship, lost and found, schedule questions, and selling con merch.
- Accessibility Coordinator – Make the con work for everyone aboard a ship full of ladders and narrow hatches: plan accessible routes, accommodations and seating, and be the go-to contact for attendees with access needs.
- Art Show Director – Launch and run an art show featuring community artists: artist applications, hanging and display, bid sheets or sales, and payouts.
- Kitchen Manager – Run our food department (pizza cones, hotdogs, crepes and the Glizzy Gobbler food pass): menus, purchasing, station staffing and food safety. Food service experience and a CA Food Handler card or Food Protection Manager certification required.
- Bar Manager – Lead our bar team: plan bar locations, help set the drink menu and bar pass, and schedule bartenders and ID checkers for every open hour. Bar/hospitality management experience, RBS certification and 21 required.
- Bartenders – Pour drinks at our furry-themed bars during evening events, Friday through Sunday. California RBS certification (or willingness to get it before the event) and 21 required.
- Food Station Crew – Serve at our food stations in shifts from Thursday setup through Sunday teardown. CA Food Handler card required.
- Panels Coordinator – Own the panelist application, selection, panel schedule and website listing as part of the programming team.
- Board Game Room Organizer – Set up and run the board game room: source games, tables and chairs, room hours, volunteer attendants and a check-out system.
- Scavenger Hunt Organizer – Design and run a ship-wide scavenger hunt: theme, format, clues, stations and prizes.
- Silent Auction & Fundraising Lead – Run the silent auction and donation asks: donation packet, item collection, auction setup and donor thank-yous.
