Job Summary
TITLE: Library Media Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS: Certification as required by the State of Alabama and the Gadsden City Board of Education
REPORTS TO: Principal
SUPERVISES: Aides, students, and volunteer workers in the library
JOB GOAL: To provide a valuable comprehensive program of library services
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists administration in initiating, developing, and implementing school policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
- Strives toward continuous professional growth as needed for one’s own professional area.
- Supervises and instructs classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods as requested.
- Performs other reasonable and appropriate assignments as may be delegated by the administration in accordance with the policies of the Gadsden City Board of Education.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates an atmosphere conducive to learning.
- Keeps the physical facilities attractive in appearance and properly organized for the age of the students.
- Serves as a resource person working cooperatively with teachers and students as groups and/or as individuals.
- Provides library instruction to groups or individuals upon request.
- Offers opportunities for research, reading, independent study, browsing, and use of all audiovisual materials.
- Maintains a basic collection of books and other printed material as required by standards to be met by the school.
- Assumes responsibility for acquiring all library materials and meeting the needs of the curriculum, teachers, and students, using the selection policy of the system as a guide.
- Communicates with the faculty and administration by:
- Keeping daily circulation records
- Keeping a calendar of requests for library reservation and usage so materials can be organized ahead of time for teachers
- Keeping a calendar for reserving audiovisual equipment
- Keeping a current file of resource people available
- Keeping a current vertical file
- Identifying and retrieving materials
- Placing materials on reserve
- Provides leadership in the development and administration of the school’s media center budget.
- Performs other reasonable and appropriate assignments as may be delegated by the administration in accordance with the policies of the Gadsden City Board of Education.
