Maryland Daycare (Child Care Center) Director Requirements

1. Age

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

2. Education and Experience

To qualify as a director (also called Center Director or Program Administrator), you must meet one of the following education and experience combinations:

Option 1 – Degree Path

  • Hold a bachelor’s or higher degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development, Elementary Education, or a related field.
  • Have at least 1 year of experience in a licensed childcare or educational setting.

Option 2 – Associate degree Path

  • Hold an associate’s degree in ECE or a related field;
  • Have at least 2 years of experience working with children in a licensed setting.

Option 3 – Coursework Experience Path

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent, and
  • Successfully complete:
  • 45-hour course in Child Growth and Development
  • 45-hour course in Curriculum Planning (for the appropriate age group)
  • 45-hour Administrative Training course (or 400 hours of administrative experience), and
  • 9-hour Communication Course, ADA training, and First Aid/CPR certification
  • Have 3 years of experience working directly with children in a childcare center, and at least 1 year in a supervisory role.

3. Training & Certification Requirements

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (for infants and children).
  • Basic Health and Safety training (MSDE-approved).
  • Emergency Preparedness and Medication Administration training (if applicable).
  • Continued annual training: 12 hours of approved professional development each year.

4. Background & Compliance

  • Must pass a criminal background check and child abuse/neglect clearance.
  • Must be approved by the MSDE Office of Child Care as the “Director” or “Director Designee.”
  • Responsible for ensuring center compliance with all COMAR child care regulations.

5. Skills & Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the childcare center.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Manage enrollment, licensing paperwork, and parent communication.
  • Maintain compliance with all health, safety, and ratio regulations.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Contract, Temporary

Pay: $43,088.13 - $55,891.08 per year

Expected hours: 40 per week
