Maryland Daycare (Child Care Center) Director Requirements
1. Age
- Must be at least 21 years old.
2. Education and Experience
To qualify as a director (also called Center Director or Program Administrator), you must meet one of the following education and experience combinations:
Option 1 – Degree Path
- Hold a bachelor’s or higher degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development, Elementary Education, or a related field.
- Have at least 1 year of experience in a licensed childcare or educational setting.
Option 2 – Associate degree Path
- Hold an associate’s degree in ECE or a related field;
- Have at least 2 years of experience working with children in a licensed setting.
Option 3 – Coursework Experience Path
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent, and
- Successfully complete:
- 45-hour course in Child Growth and Development
- 45-hour course in Curriculum Planning (for the appropriate age group)
- 45-hour Administrative Training course (or 400 hours of administrative experience), and
- 9-hour Communication Course, ADA training, and First Aid/CPR certification
- Have 3 years of experience working directly with children in a childcare center, and at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
3. Training & Certification Requirements
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (for infants and children).
- Basic Health and Safety training (MSDE-approved).
- Emergency Preparedness and Medication Administration training (if applicable).
- Continued annual training: 12 hours of approved professional development each year.
4. Background & Compliance
- Must pass a criminal background check and child abuse/neglect clearance.
- Must be approved by the MSDE Office of Child Care as the “Director” or “Director Designee.”
- Responsible for ensuring center compliance with all COMAR child care regulations.
5. Skills & Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the childcare center.
- Supervise and evaluate staff.
- Manage enrollment, licensing paperwork, and parent communication.
- Maintain compliance with all health, safety, and ratio regulations.

Pay: $43,088.13 - $55,891.08 per year
