Position Summary
Experienced Maintenance Manager to lead maintenance for a vertically integrated softwood sawmill complex with dry-kiln capacity, two circle sawmills, planar, molder, reman, stacker, Scragg mill operations, and heavy rolling equipment (loaders, knuckle booms, forklifts etc.). This role directs a maintenance team, spare-parts ordering, manages contractors and OEM relationships, and drives safety, uptime and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead planning and execution of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance across the mill complex.
- Develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs, CMMS data and PDM implementation.
- Supervise, mentor and schedule maintenance supervisors and technicians across multiple buildings and shifts; manage handovers and workforce performance.
- Oversee dry kiln maintenance and outages for a large dry kiln complex, ensuring drying schedules and production targets.
- Maintain sawmill-specific equipment including circle saw systems (heads, carriages, edgers), planer, molder, reman, stacker, and live decks.
- Manager heavy rolling equipment maintenance and rebuild programs for loaders, knuckle booms and material-handling equipment.
- Build and control spare-parts inventory; maintain critical-spares list, reorder points and obsolescence reduction.
- Lead cause analysis and implement corrective actions after incidents; ensure compliance with safety programs and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with outside contractors, OEM service visits and capital improvement projects; prepare budgets and justifications tied to ROI.
Minimum Qualifications
- Several (10 ) years of hands-on and supervisory maintenance experience in vertically integrated sawmill operations.
- Experience with circle-head sawmill systems and carriage/edger interfaces.
- Experience maintaining large dry-kiln complexes and associated controls, fans and steam/hot-water & Hurst biomass boiler systems.
- Advanced, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting skills including PLSs, motor controls and VFDs.
- Significant heavy rolling equipment maintenance experience with loaders, knuckle booms, and forklifts.
- Demonstrated success implementing PM and PDM programs and using a CMMS.
- Strong leadership experience managing teams and coordinating with production and safety.
- Valid driver’s license and availability for longer workdays and emergency call outs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Please list all schooling diplomas and certifications such as:
- Technical diploma. Journeyman trade certification or associate’s degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial maintenance.
- Steam Boiler certification
- Knowledge of Mean Time Between Failures
- Formal certifications in PLCs, industrial hydraulics, variable frequency drives or mechanical and/or electrical engineering.
- Direct Scragg mill operations and maintenance experience.
- Safety certifications such as OSHA 30 and lockout/tagout trainer credentials.
- Track record of improving MTBF, reducing MTTR and optimizing maintenance cost per board foot.
Performance Expectations and KPIs
- Increase overall equipment availability and uptime.
- Improve MTBF and reduce MTTR on critical equipment.
- Meet kiln schedule and minimize drying-line downtime due to maintenance.
- Reduce maintenance cost per board foot and optimize spare-parts turnover.
- Maintain or improve safety metrics including lost-time incidents and audit results.
- Achieve high PM completion rates and timely response to predictive alerts.
