Position Summary
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Oklahoma City, OK for a Senior Substation Electrical Engineer. The role involves supporting the organization by utilizing specialized Electrical Engineering expertise in substation protection, control design, and implementation. This role focuses on the development of protection schemes, relay logic, and automation for high-voltage substations supporting AI Datacenter facilities. You will ensure the reliability and safety of power infrastructure through advanced relay coordination, fault analysis, drawing development, facility integration and checkout.
Key duties and Responsibilities
- Protection Scheme Design: Design, commission, and troubleshoot complex substation protection schemes, including Differential (87), Distance (21), Overcurrent (50/51), and Bus Protection.
- Relay Logic & Programming: Perform advanced programming and logic development for SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories). Develop logic for auto-transfer schemes, breaker failure, and interlocking.
- System Modeling: Lead power system modeling efforts, including Short Circuit, Coordination, and Arc Flash studies using ETAP.
- Substation Automation: Implement substation automation and communications using protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, and Modbus. Manage the integration of RTUs and HMIs within the substation environment.
- Apparatus Expertise: Provide technical oversight for substation primary equipment, including power transformers (LTC control), high-voltage circuit breakers, instrument transformers (CT/PT sizing and accuracy), and grounding systems.
- Fault Analysis: Investigate system disturbances by analyzing Event Reports and COMTRADE files from digital relays to identify root causes of trips and system failures.
- Compliance & Standards: Ensure all designs comply with NERC/FERC reliability standards, IEEE C37 series (Power System Protection), and National Electric Code (NEC).
- Commissioning Lead: Develop and execute detailed P&C commissioning plans, including point-to-point wiring verification, relay functional testing, and end-to-end communication checks.
- Project Management: Prepare technical specifications, protection philosophies, and cost estimates for substation capital projects while managing timelines via Gantt charts.
Key duties and Responsibilities
- Education: BS in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain highly preferred.
- Experience: minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in Substation P&C design or protection engineering.
- Expertise in SEL AcSELerator QuickSet and Architect software.
- Understanding of symmetrical components and fault analysis.
- Understanding of complex substation protection schemes and automation.
- Ability to communicate complex protection philosophies to non-technical stakeholders and resolve technical disputes with diplomacy.
- Ability to work with multiple engineering disciplines and operational groups
- Self-motivated individual with the ability to set and achieve goals with minimal supervision
