About Furniture Management Solutions

Furniture Management Solutions (FMS) provides comprehensive furniture inventory, management, repair, reupholstery, refinishing, moving, storage, and budgetary support services to hospitals and healthcare facilities.

We help healthcare organizations extend the useful life of their furniture assets, maintain professional environments, reduce unnecessary replacement costs, and make informed decisions about their furniture investments.

Our team delivers practical, dependable furniture solutions through quality workmanship, accurate documentation, careful furniture handling, and coordinated service. We value employees who take pride in their work, communicate effectively, and understand that every furniture item is an asset entrusted to our care.

Position Summary

The Upholstery Technician supports FMS's furniture repair and asset management operations by inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and reupholstering commercial and healthcare furniture. This position combines hands-on upholstery work with accurate furniture identification, work-order management, repair documentation, quality control, and coordination with our moving, storage, refinishing, and other service operations.

Previous upholstery or related hands-on trade experience is preferred, but we are open to training a dependable, mechanically inclined candidate who demonstrates strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, problem-solving ability, and pride in quality workmanship.

The successful candidate will learn FMS procedures for identifying furniture, following work orders, documenting repair needs and completed work, tracking project status, and helping ensure furniture moves efficiently through the repair and service process.

Key Responsibilities

Upholstery, Repair & Restoration

  • Inspect furniture to identify upholstery damage, worn components, structural issues, and repair requirements.
  • Remove existing fabric, vinyl, staples, foam, padding, and damaged materials.
  • Measure, cut, sew, fit, stretch, and install upholstery materials according to project specifications.
  • Repair or replace foam, cushions, padding, springs, webbing, decking, and other support components.
  • Perform minor frame repairs and structural adjustments as trained and qualified.
  • Maintain consistent standards for workmanship, functionality, appearance, cleanliness, and durability.
  • Identify opportunities to repair and extend furniture life when practical.

Furniture Identification & Work-Order Management

  • Identify and verify furniture items against work orders, inventory records, labels, photographs, or other available project information.
  • Ensure furniture is properly identified and associated with the correct customer, location, project, and required service.
  • Review work orders and instructions before starting work and ask questions when information is missing or unclear.
  • Document furniture condition, identified repair needs, work performed, materials used, and additional issues discovered.
  • Update work-order status and communicate project progress, delays, and completion to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Report discrepancies between furniture received, work orders, and project documentation.
  • Help maintain accurate records that support FMS furniture inventory and asset management services.

Coordination with Moving, Storage & Other Services

  • Coordinate with supervisors and team members to ensure furniture is properly staged and moved through receiving, repair, refinishing, storage, and delivery processes.
  • Communicate when furniture is ready for the next stage of service, requires additional work, or cannot be completed as originally planned.
  • Assist with furniture receiving, staging, loading, unloading, pickup, delivery, and installation when needed.
  • Handle customer furniture carefully and help prevent damage, misidentification, loss, or unnecessary delays.
  • Support other furniture-related projects and operational duties as business needs require.

Materials, Tools & Workplace Safety

  • Use and maintain upholstery equipment, sewing machines, staple guns, hand tools, cutting tools, and power tools safely.
  • Learn appropriate uses of healthcare-grade vinyl, commercial fabrics, foam, adhesives, and related materials.
  • Monitor material usage and notify management when supplies are low or additional materials are needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Follow company procedures, equipment instructions, and applicable workplace safety requirements.

Teamwork & Customer Service

  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, drivers, project personnel, and clients when applicable.
  • Follow customer and facility requirements when working at hospitals and other healthcare locations.
  • Respect the property, workspaces, and operational needs of customers.
  • Contribute to a team environment focused on accountability, efficiency, accuracy, and quality service.

Qualifications

Required

  • Dependability, punctuality, and a strong willingness to learn.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and a practical, hands-on approach to work.
  • Ability to stay organized, manage assigned tasks, and communicate questions or concerns.
  • Ability to work independently when trained and collaborate effectively with a team.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and responsible handling of customer property.
  • Professional attitude and accountability for assigned work.

Preferred, but Not Required

  • Previous upholstery, furniture repair, furniture refinishing, carpentry, automotive upholstery, or other related hands-on trade experience.
  • Familiarity with commercial furniture, healthcare furniture, fabrics, vinyl, foam, sewing, or furniture construction.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, staple guns, or industrial sewing machines.
  • Experience working with work orders, inventory records, repair documentation, or warehouse processes.
  • Experience in moving, storage, receiving, delivery, or asset management operations.
  • Valid driver's license, particularly for roles involving transportation or client-site assignments.

Candidates without direct upholstery experience may be considered if they demonstrate the aptitude, reliability, mechanical ability, and work ethic needed to develop the required skills.

  • Demonstrating dependable attendance, safe work habits, initiative, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
