Lab Assistant (Part-Time)
FUME Fragrances — Bushwick / Ridgewood, NYC
$17/hour · 8–20 hours/week
Company Description
FUME Fragrances is an experimental fragrance studio based in Bushwick/Ridgewood, focused on creating distinctive, concept-driven scents. We operate as a small, hands-on team and value precision, curiosity, and care in everything we make. We’re looking for a detail-oriented Lab Assistant to help keep both our lab and our growing community running smoothly.
Role Overview
This part-time role (typically 2–3 days per week) is ideal for someone curious about perfumery and excited to learn the inner workings of a niche fragrance house. You’ll support day-to-day lab operations, assist with production and fulfillment, and contribute to our social presence by helping document and share the behind-the-scenes life of the studio.
You’ll be a key support role—keeping the lab organized and functional while gaining hands-on exposure to fragrance materials, compounding, and small-batch production.
What You’ll Do
Lab & Production Support
- Clean and maintain the lab workspace to ensure a safe, organized environment
- Organize and track inventory of raw materials, bottles, and lab supplies
- Assist with measuring and compounding fragrance formulas with accuracy
- Support light manufacturing tasks including filling, crimping, and labeling bottles
- Handle bottles, pipettes, and lab equipment with care
- Safely work with essential oils, aroma chemicals, and solvents
Operations & Fulfillment
- Assist with packing and shipping customer orders
- Help maintain order accuracy and presentation standards
- Update and maintain ingredient database
Social & Community Support
- Assist with capturing simple photo/video content in the studio (process, materials, behind-the-scenes moments)
- Support basic social media posting and content organization (primarily Instagram)
- Help monitor messages, comments, and general community engagement in a thoughtful, on-brand way
- Flag interesting studio moments, launches, or customer feedback for the team
What We’re Looking For
- Currently located in NYC and able to commute to the Bushwick/Ridgewood studio 2-4 days per week. We unfortunately will not consider candidates not already living in NYC.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions
- Organized, reliable, and proactive
- Comfortable with repetitive tasks and measuring small quantities
- Able to lift up to ~25 lbs (e.g., cases of ethanol or boxed bottles)
- Experience working in Google Sheets
- Flexible availability for part-time shifts
- Interest in fragrance, chemistry, art, and production work
- Comfort using a smartphone for basic photo/video capture (no professional experience required)
Lab or production experience is a plus, but not required — training will be provided.
Perks & Opportunities
- Hands-on exposure to niche perfumery and fragrance production
- Learn lab techniques, material handling, and industry best practices
- Creative, collaborative studio environment
- Opportunity to grow alongside an expanding independent brand
- All training and safety equipment provided
Compensation
