Floater Teacher Job Description

Position Summary

The Floater Teacher provides a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children by assisting in classrooms throughout the center as needed. This position supports classroom teachers by maintaining daily routines, ensuring active supervision, and promoting positive relationships with children, families, staff, and volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom coverage during lunch breaks, staff absences, planning time, and as directed by the Director.
  • Maintain active supervision of children at all times, including during classroom activities, transitions, outdoor play, meals, and rest time.
  • Support the implementation of developmentally appropriate activities that encourage children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
  • Maintain classroom routines and daily schedules to provide consistency for children.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and nurturing environment using appropriate guidance and behavior management techniques.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary classroom environment while following all health and safety procedures.
  • Assist with meals, diapering, toileting, handwashing, and other daily care routines as needed.
  • Follow all FUMC Child Care Center policies and procedures, as well as Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) licensing requirements.
  • Promptly report any concerns regarding children, families, staff, safety hazards, injuries, illnesses, or suspected child abuse or neglect to the Director.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents, staff members, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director.

Decision-Making Authority

The Floater Teacher works under the supervision of the Director and is responsible for following all center policies, procedures, licensing regulations, and health and safety requirements. The Floater Teacher is expected to support decisions made by management, exercise sound judgment, maintain professionalism, and seek guidance whenever clarification is needed. The Floater Teacher must notify the Director of any limitations that may affect their ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous childcare experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Dependable, flexible, positive, and able to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • A genuine desire to support children’s learning and development through positive interactions.

Required Training and Licensing Requirements

  • Successfully complete all required Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) background check requirements and maintain eligibility for employment in accordance with Ohio law.
  • Complete a pre-employment health screening with required documentation on file by the first day of employment.
  • Obtain Infant/Child CPR, First Aid, Communicable Disease, and Child Abuse & Neglect certifications within 90 days of hire.
  • Complete New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete Ohio’s Approach to Quality (OATQ) and Ohio’s Overview of Child Development within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete all additional training required by the Ohio Department of Children and Youth.
  • Complete a minimum of six (6) hours of professional development each fiscal year, or as otherwise required by Ohio licensing regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrate a full range of motion and the ability to actively engage with young children.
  • Frequently lift, carry, and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Maintain the mental and physical alertness necessary to ensure children’s safety and well-being.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions as required.

Pay: $13.00 - $14.00 per hour
