What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vehicle Mechanic position at Fullerton Joint Union High School District?
VEHICLE MECHANIC
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, perform skilled work in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and electronic problems in vehicles; repair gasoline and diesel equipment, such as trucks, buses, automobiles, power lawn mowers, forklifts, tractors, and other mechanical equipment; and perform related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Inspect buses for conformance to California Highway Patrol standards;
2. Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects on gasoline and diesel powered buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors, forklifts, mowers, other mechanical equipment, and power tools;
3. Maintain mechanical equipment, including repair of electrical parts of system;
4. Repair standard and automatic clutches, transmissions, differentials, joints, hydraulic systems, and major gas and diesel engine overhaul;
5. Align wheels, adjust hydraulic and air brakes;
6. Install and/or remove dual controls in driver education equipment as required;
7. Install batteries, brakes, wiring, window glass, and door handles;
8. Inspect and repair water cooling systems;
9. Change and repair tires and tubes;
10. Grease and service equipment;
11. Perform minor repair welding;
12. Make service calls for emergency repairs;
13. Requisition or purchase needed parts and tools;
14. Maintain records of repairs made and time worked; and
15. Prepare State of California bus inspection reports.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. Principles of internal combustion engines;
2. Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in repair, maintenance, and operation; and
3. Methods and procedures used in repair, overhaul, and adjustment of heavy-duty automatic transmissions.
ABILITY TO:
1. Diagnose and repair mechanical problems;
2. Operate equipment used in repairing or servicing motorized equipment;
3. Maintain simple records;
4. Lift;
5. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and
6. Participate and pass random drug and alcohol testing.
EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to:
1. Graduation from high school; and
2. Three years of experience in general gasoline and light-duty diesel powered equipment repair work.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a valid State of California Class B Drivers License; and
2. Possession of a valid California DMV Medical Examiner's Certificate (DL-51A)
