Afterschool Program Teacher/Caregiver - Position Summary

The Playspace Afterschool Program Teacher/Caregiver provides a safe, nurturing, engaging, and faith-based environment for children ages 18 months through 6 years following the preschool day. Staff are responsible for supervising children, facilitating age-appropriate play and activities, maintaining a positive and welcoming atmosphere, and ensuring the health and safety of every child in accordance with MinistrySafe policies and church guidelines.

This position supports the mission of Fullerton First United Methodist Church (FFUMC) by extending high-quality childcare services to preschool families and the surrounding community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide attentive and compassionate care for children ages 18 months through 6 years.
• Maintain active supervision of children at all times while adhering to an 8:1 child-to-staff ratio.
• Foster a warm, inclusive, and faith-based environment where children feel safe, valued, and encouraged.
• Lead age-appropriate indoor and outdoor play, creative activities, games, and quiet rest periods.
• Prepare and supervise afternoon snack time while following program nutrition guidelines.
• Assist children with toileting, diapering (when applicable), handwashing, and other personal care needs while maintaining dignity and sanitation.
• Ensure all children receive appropriate supervision during playground activities.
• Support children during rest time by helping create a calm and comforting environment.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe classrooms and activity spaces, including the nursery, church library, and playground.
• Follow all MinistrySafe policies and procedures and immediately report any safety concerns or incidents.
• Complete attendance records and verify sign-in and sign-out procedures with parents and authorized guardians.
• Build positive relationships with children, parents, preschool staff, church staff, and volunteers.
• Communicate professionally with families regarding daily activities, concerns, or important updates.
• Respond appropriately to medical emergencies, behavioral concerns, and accidents according to church policies.
• Assist with opening, closing, cleaning, and securing program spaces each day.
• Participate in staff meetings and training as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Experience working with young children in childcare, preschool, Sunday school, camps, or similar settings preferred.
• Passion for working with children and supporting their social, emotional, and developmental growth.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm, patient, and organized in a fast-paced childcare environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Required Before Employment

• Successful completion of MinistrySafe Training, provided by Employer.
• Successful background check.
• CPR and First Aid certification (preferred or willingness to obtain).

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lift and carry children up to approximately 40 pounds.
• Sit on the floor, kneel, bend, squat, and actively engage in play.
• Supervise children outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Respond quickly to emergencies and maintain active supervision throughout the program.

Work Schedule

We are seeking two staff members at this time.

Staff 1:
Monday–Friday (5 days)
2:00 PM – 6:00PM (4 hrs/day) = 20 hours per week

Staff 2:
Monday and Friday (2 days)
2:00 PM – 6:00PM (4 hrs/day) = 10 hours per week

Work Environment

The Playspace Afterschool Program is a church-operated, non-licensed childcare program serving preschool-aged children. Staff work primarily in the church nursery, library, and playground while creating a welcoming, fun, and environment that reflects the mission and values of Fullerton First United Methodist church.

Pay: $18.50 per hour
