Position Summary

The Comptroller oversees Fuller Center’s daily financial operations, ensuring strong financial management, accurate reporting, and compliance across all funding streams. This leadership role is designed as a growth path to Chief Financial Officer (CFO), working closely with the CEO and COO to strengthen financial systems, support strategic decision-making, and build infrastructure for organizational growth. The ideal candidate has strong nonprofit financial experience, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to leadership and the Board of Directors.


  • Position Purpose: Ensure accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial operations
  • Strengthen financial systems, controls, and reporting
  • Support leadership and the Board with actionable financial insights
  • Develop into a future CFO-level leader

Key Responsibilities

  • 1. Financial Operations & Accounting Management Oversee accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, and monthly/year-end close processes
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Maintain and improve financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • 2. Financial Reporting & Board Engagement: Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analyses, and supporting reports
  • Present financial reports to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee
  • Translate financial data into strategic insights for non-financial stakeholders
  • Support leadership and Board decision-making through financial analysis
  • 3. Budgeting & Forecasting Support: Support and help lead the annual budgeting process
  • Develop forecasts and financial projections
  • Monitor departmental budgets and ensure accountability
  • Build advanced skills in financial modeling and scenario planning
  • 4. Audit, Compliance & Risk Management: Lead annual audit preparation and serve as liaison to external auditors
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, nonprofit, grant, and funding requirements
  • Maintain strong internal controls and documentation
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks proactively
  • 5. Grants Financial Oversight: Support grant-funded programs through proposal budgeting, restricted/unrestricted fund tracking, and grant financial reporting
  • Partner with grants and program teams to align financial data with funder requirements
  • 6. Cash Flow & Financial Management: Monitor cash flow and liquidity
  • Support banking relationships and financial transactions
  • Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities
  • 7. Systems, Process Improvement & Infrastructure: Improve financial systems, reporting tools, workflows, and technology
  • Increase efficiency and scalability of financial operations
  • 8. Team Leadership & Development: Supervise and support accounting and finance staff
  • Foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Help build a scalable finance function
  • 9. Leadership Development (Path to CFO)Partner with the CEO and COO on financial strategy, long-term planning, and organizational growth
  • Gradually assume greater responsibility for forecasting, strategic analysis, and Board-level leadership

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5–10 years of nonprofit financial experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Experience with audits, budgeting, financial reporting, and Board presentations
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Preferred: Master’s degree (MBA, MAcc, or related)
  • CPA or pursuit of certification
  • Experience in human services, early childhood education, or similar sectors
  • Familiarity with government funding and grant compliance
  • Experience with multi-site/multi-program organizations and financial systems
  • Leadership Competencies: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • High integrity and accountability
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Capacity to grow into executive leadership

Position Impact

The Comptroller plays a vital role in ensuring Fuller Center’s financial strength, compliance, and operational integrity by supporting leadership and the Board with accurate financial information and building systems for long-term sustainability. This position is intentionally structured as a pipeline to future CFO leadership.

FLSA Classification

This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
