What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director position at Full Spectrum Farms?
Full Spectrum Farms is a small, mission-driven nonprofit organization located on a beautiful 34-acre organic farm in Western North Carolina. We help adults with autism build life skills, foster community connections, and thrive through innovative, nature-based programs that combine outdoor activities, gardening, and practical “adulting” support
We are seeking a part-time Director to step into a critical, hands-on leadership role. In our lean organization, this position is responsible for keeping the farm running safely and smoothly while ensuring high-quality program delivery and organizational sustainability. You will be the primary on-site leader, actively involved in daily operations, participant support, team coordination, and behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything functioning. This is a great fit for a versatile, proactive professional who thrives in a dynamic, outdoor environment and is passionate about neurodiversity and community impact.
The role reports directly to the Board of Directors and is essential for maintaining program continuity as we grow. We need someone who can start as soon as possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations & Site Care: Oversee daily opening/closing, cleaning and maintenance of facilities and program spaces, safety checks, basic property upkeep, garden care, supply monitoring, and immediate troubleshooting to keep the farm safe, clean, and welcoming.
- Programs & Participant Support: Provide on-site supervision and hands-on support during programming, including participant engagement, attendance tracking, real-time issue resolution, and delivery of weekly life-skills and outdoor activities.
- Staff, Volunteers & Interns: Direct and support instructors, volunteers, and interns; handle scheduling, training, task delegation, check-ins, recruitment, and retention to ensure consistent staffing and a positive team environment.
- Communications: Manage day-to-day emails, phone inquiries, family/caregiver updates, social media posts, event reminders, and community outreach while building trust with participants and families.
- Finance & Grants: Track expenses, support budget monitoring, maintain grant compliance documentation, and assist with reporting and financial reconciliation to protect funding and ensure accountability.
- Overall Leadership: Contribute to program planning, quality improvement, risk management, and longer-term projects that support the farm’s mission and growth.
This is a multi-faceted role that requires reliable on-site presence during programming hours and a flexible, solution-oriented mindset.
Qualifications
- We are looking for a mid-level professional with the following:
- 3 years of relevant experience in nonprofit operations, program coordination, human services, education, or farm/agricultural settings (or a comparable combination of education and experience).
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt quickly in a small-team, fast-paced environment.
- Experience or strong interest in supporting adults with autism or neurodiverse populations.
- Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfort with hands-on work in an outdoor farm setting and a genuine passion for our mission of inclusion, nature-based learning, and community support.
Previous experience with volunteer/intern coordination, basic grant/finance management, or facility operations is a plus but not required—we value practical skills and a willingness to learn and grow with the organization.
What We Offer
- The chance to make a direct, meaningful impact in a growing organization that truly changes lives.
- A stunning farm setting where you’ll spend time outdoors supporting programs that combine nature, skill-building, and joy.
- Flexible part-time schedule with a hybrid on-site/remote balance where appropriate.
- A collaborative environment with a dedicated Board, volunteers, and community partners deeply committed to the mission.
- Full Spectrum Farms is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all team members and participants.
