FST Technical Services provides quality assurance, commissioning, and technical services for complex construction projects across the pharmaceutical, semiconductor, data center, advanced manufacturing, and other mission-critical industries.

FST is seeking an experienced Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to support a major pharmaceutical construction project in Lebanon, Indiana. This field-based role focuses on piping fabrication, welding, installation, testing, and turnover.

This position includes mobilization funds and full per diem for qualified traveling candidates.

Position Summary

The CWI will oversee and verify the quality of piping system fabrication, welding, and installation throughout construction, startup, and turnover. The successful candidate will provide hands-on quality oversight of piping installation, welding, and joint integrity; perform and review weld and NDT inspections; verify compliance with applicable codes and approved welding procedures; oversee testing and system preparation activities; and support turnover of critical piping systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide field quality oversight for piping fabrication, welding, and installation throughout construction, startup, and turnover
• Perform and review weld inspections as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), including visual weld inspection
• Review NDT results including RT, UT, PT, and MT
• Verify welder qualifications and compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR)
• Verify piping fabrication and installation in accordance with project specifications, approved drawings, ASME B31.3, applicable ASME/ANSI requirements, and owner quality standards
• Perform field inspections, audits, and construction walkdowns; review project Quality Plans, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), procedures, and turnover requirements
• Monitor piping fabrication, welding, joint fit-up, NDT, flushing, passivation, and pressure/hydrostatic testing
• Verify installation of process and utility piping systems, including chilled water, heating hot water, condenser water, steam, compressed air, and other critical utilities
• Inspect and support hygienic and high-purity piping applications associated with pharmaceutical and controlled-environment facilities
• Maintain accurate inspection reports, testing records, turnover packages, deficiency logs, NCRs, corrective actions, and quality metrics
• Coordinate with construction, engineering, commissioning, contractors, and subcontractors to resolve quality issues and promote safety, quality, and accountability
  
  

Required Qualifications

• Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or NDT VT level II experience required
• NDT certification, if you do not have an ASNT issued cert, will be provided through training and certification via FST’s Level III NDT certified trainer.
• Minimum 10 years of construction quality experience supporting mechanical systems, HVAC equipment, piping fabrication, welding, and piping installation
• Minimum 5 years of direct cleanroom construction experience within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, or similar controlled-environment facilities
• Experience with GMP-regulated facilities and cleanroom validation processes required
• Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale commercial or industrial construction projects
• Strong working knowledge of ASME B31.3, ASME/ANSI standards, welding requirements, and applicable mechanical/building codes
• Experience reviewing NDT results and verifying welder qualifications, WPSs, and PQRs
• Experience with process piping, utility piping, high-purity/hygienic piping, formal Quality Management Systems (QMS), quality documentation, and turnover records
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, commissioning documentation, and quality records
• Strong communication, organization, documentation, and problem-solving skills
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant industry experience will be considered
• Experience supporting commissioning, qualification, startup, and turnover of critical facility systems
• Experience with digital construction quality management and issue-tracking platforms
• Previous experience supporting large pharmaceutical or advanced manufacturing capital projects
  
  

Project & Compensation Highlights

• Initial anticipated project duration of approximately 12 months with potential extensions
• Mobilization funds provided for qualified traveling candidates
• Full per diem provided for qualified traveling candidates
• Competitive compensation and significant overtime opportunities; approximately 10 hours of overtime per week is typical
• On-site schedule, five days per week; some weekend work may be required based on project needs
  
  

Work Environment

This is an on-site field position in an active industrial construction environment. Candidates should be comfortable working around piping installations, mechanical systems, construction equipment, elevated work areas, and active trade operations.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout an active construction site
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders and safely access elevated or confined work areas as required for inspections
• Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and move around piping, mechanical equipment, and construction materials
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance when appropriate
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, hearing protection, and safety-toe footwear
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor construction environments that may include heat, cold, noise, dust, uneven surfaces, and varying weather conditions
• Visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, sufficient to perform detailed visual weld and piping inspections, review markings and documentation, and identify workmanship or quality concerns
• Ability to safely perform field inspections for the duration of the assigned work shift, including overtime and occasional weekend work as project needs require
