Job Summary

The Prevention Specialist is an essential figure within the public health and social services sectors. The Prevention Specialist dedicates their expertise to the development and implementation of programs aimed at preventing substance abuse, mental health issues, and other high-risk behaviors within communities. The position demands a unique blend of skills, including strong communication, analytical capabilities, and cultural competency, to effectively design strategies that promote healthier lifestyles and environments.

The ideal candidate will be able to implement knowledge of the treatment process from first contact to the evaluation of client outcomes; and have effective written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and a strong ability to work cooperatively with other professionals or school administration either in teams or in consultation.

Knowledge of, and compliance with, the principles of professional ethics is essential. Knowledge of computers, software applications and mobile communication devices is also needed.

Education and Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in prevention or a similar role.
  • Master’s degree in public health, social work, or related field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social work, or related field.

Ability to communicate and deliver culturally competent therapeutic services in Spanish, including reading, writing and speaking, is highly desired. FSC provides stipends to Spanish speakers and team members who enable us to serve our Spanish-speaking population.

FSC employs a diverse team of clinical providers, including Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and LPCAssociates; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) and LMFT-Associates; and Licensed Masters/Clinical Social Workers (LMSW/LCSW), Peer Support Specialists, and Prevention Specialists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement evidencebased prevention programs and curricula in schools, community centers, and partner organizations.
  • Conduct outreach and build relationships with community stakeholders, including schools, parents, youth, and service providers.
  • Facilitate presentations, workshops, and training sessions tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Collect and analyze data to measure program outcomes, ensure grant compliance, and prepare reports for funders and supervisors.
  • Participate in community coalitions, task forces, and partnerships to strengthen prevention efforts.
  • Ensure that programming is culturally competent, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of services delivered and provide timely documentation.
  • Stay current on prevention best practices, emerging trends, and relevant public health issues.
  • Support crisis intervention and referral services when needed, while maintaining professional boundaries.

  • Knowledge of prevention strategies, evidencebased practices, and community health models.
  • Ability to collect, track, and analyze data for reporting and evaluation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Cultural competence and commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with community partners.

Work Environment

  • Office and communitybased settings (schools, events, partner sites).
  • Frequent local travel to community events and partner organizations.
  • Combination of desk work, outreach, and interactive presentations.
