Position Overview :
The Financial Director serves as a key financial leader within the township government, providing professional oversight and strategic direction for all fiscal operations under the guidance of the elected Township Treasurer. This role is responsible for assisting in the management of the township’s financial resources, ensuring legal compliance, sound budgeting practices, transparent reporting, and efficient financial administration.
The Financial Director will work closely with the Township Treasurer, department heads, auditors, and public stakeholders to maintain the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the township.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting:
- Assist the Township Treasurer in preparing and managing the township’s annual budget.
- Develop and maintain internal financial controls to safeguard township assets.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the Township Board and other stakeholders.
- Monitor cash flow, investments, and bank reconciliations. Accounting & Recordkeeping:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, and general ledger maintenance.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and other relevant financial standards.
- Maintain accurate records for audits, grant reporting, and compliance purposes. Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Collaborate with departments to develop budget requests and forecasts.
- Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis with recommendations. Audit & Compliance:
- Coordinate annual external audits and ensure timely completion.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations.
- Assist in preparing financial documentation required for grant applications and reporting. Policy & Procedure Development:
- Recommend and implement financial policies, procedures, and systems to improve efficiency and transparency.
- Train staff in financial policies and software tools as needed. Advisory Role:
- Act as an advisor to the Township Treasurer on financial planning and risk management.
- Provide financial insights to support decision-making by the Treasurer and Township Board.
· Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field (Master’s or CPA preferred).
o Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in governmental or public sector finance.
o Strong understanding of municipal finance laws and regulations.
o Proficiency with financial software (e.g., BS&A, QuickBooks, or similar), spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
o Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
o High ethical standards, discretion, and professionalism.

o Primarily office-based with occasional attendance at township meetings or public events.
o May require occasional evening or weekend hours for budget sessions or board meetings.
