Job Description Chemistry Supervisor (Laboratory Manager) Location: Hartford area, near New Britain, CT Compensation: $70,000 - $100,000 base salary Benefits: 401(k) 401(k) matching Dental insurance, Vision insurance, Health insurance, Life insurance PTO Position Summary The Chemistry Department Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the chemistry laboratory, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant analytical testing. This role manages and provides technical leadership to analysts, maintains regulatory compliance, supports method development and continuous improvement, and acts as a key liaison between laboratory staff, quality assurance, and management. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with strong analytical chemistry expertise, proven supervisory experience, and a commitment to quality, efficiency, and scientific integrity.
Key Responsibilities Laboratory Operations & Supervision Supervise, support and mentor chemistry analysts and technicians, including training, scheduling, and performance management Oversee daily workflow to ensure sample throughput, turnaround time, and data quality goals are met Assign workloads, prioritize samples, and troubleshoot analytical or operational issues Ensure proper documentation, data review, and reporting of analytical results Quality Assurance & Compliance Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, accreditation standards, and internal SOPs (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025, state or federal requirements) Review analytical data, QC results, and reports for accuracy and completeness Participate in audits, inspections, and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) processes Maintain data integrity and uphold good laboratory practices (GLP) Technical Oversight Provide technical guidance on analytical methods and instrumentation (e.g., GC, GC/MS, HPLC, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, wet chemistry) Support method development, validation, verification, and continuous improvement initiatives Troubleshoot instrumentation and coordinate maintenance, calibration, and service Evaluate new technologies, methods, or workflows to improve efficiency and quality Training & Development Train new and existing staff on methods, SOPs, safety procedures, and best practices Maintain training records and ensure staff competency requirements are met Foster a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and teamwork Safety & Laboratory Management Enforce laboratory safety policies and chemical hygiene practices Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste Maintain inventory of reagents, standards, consumables, and supplies Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related scientific field Minimum of (5) years of hands-on analytical chemistry laboratory experience At least 1-2 years of management, supervisory or lead-level experience in a laboratory setting Strong working knowledge of analytical instrumentation and QA/QC principles Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills Preferred Master's or Doctorate degree in Chemistry or related field Experience in ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories Experience with LIMS systems and electronic data management Background in environmental, food, pharmaceutical, or cannabis testing laboratories Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to work in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and instrumentation Ability to stand, walk, and perform laboratory tasks for extended periods
