Position Overview
We are seeking a Controller to lead our accounting operations and help build scalable financial systems. This role will oversee our existing bookkeeping team, improve reporting processes, and provide financial insights into our real estate portfolio.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys both managing people and building systems, with a strong understanding of real estate accounting.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Oversight
- Manage and mentor a 2-person bookkeeping team
- Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and consistency in all accounting functions
- Establish internal controls and standard operating procedures
Financial Reporting & Processes
- Develop and implement monthly financial reporting packages
- Improve and streamline accounting workflows and processes
- Ensure clean, organized financials across multiple entities
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Build and maintain financial models, projections, and budgets
- Analyze performance of real estate assets (property-level and portfolio-level)
- Provide actionable insights to ownership on cash flow, ROI, and operational efficiency
- Assist with evaluating new acquisitions and investments
Systems & Integration
- Work within and optimize AppFolio (our management CRM) for property-level accounting
- Lead transition and integration from QuickBooks into AppFolio where appropriate
- Evaluate and improve use of accounting and CRM systems
Compliance & Oversight
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal controls
- Coordinate with external CPAs for tax preparation and audits
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5 years of accounting experience (real estate experience strongly preferred)
- Experience managing or supervising accounting staff
- Strong Excel and financial modeling skills
Preferred:
- CPA license (strongly preferred)
- Experience with AppFolio, QuickBooks, or similar systems
- Experience with real estate accounting, multi-entity structures, and property-level reporting
- Familiarity with CRM and property management software
