Homeschool enrichment program seeking experienced individual to instruct students 6th - 12th grade


General Construction Teacher (For 26-27 school year)

Position Purpose

  • Under the general supervision of the Program Director, plans, organizes, and presents instruction and instructional environments which help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development for career and technical education.
  • Provide classroom learning experiences to students
  • . Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in future career endeavors.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct an instructional program that educates students about career pathways in construction.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Enhance youth leadership and utilize Homebuilders Institute (HBI) and TEACH construction as an integral part of instruction.
  • Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a global economy and gain skills.
  • Deliver training to learners in Construction to cover both the establishment's needs and aspiration in working towards gaining recognized accreditations.
  • Induct learners to the workshop/area of work and train them in aspects such as Health and Safety, Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH), and tool usage.
  • Initiate, facilitate and moderate classroom discussions.
  • Oversee supervised construction experience programs for all students who receive instruction.
  • Plan and conduct an organized program of instruction. This may include, but is not limited to, industry partners and organizations. Classes will be conducted during the day for homeschool programs.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, industry certification trainings, or by conducting research.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by FRCA procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents including coordinating demonstration events.
  • Ensure that student conduct conforms to the program’s standards and policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within FRCA.
  • Knowledge of all aspect of the building industry; carpentry theory and applications in the following areas:

1. Woodworking;

2. Framing;

3. Finish work;

4. Cabinet layout and construction;

5. Roofing;

6. Exterior siding applications;

7. Hanging doors and windows;

8. Shooting grades;

9. Interior applications (drywall hanging, taping, texturing, painting, etc.);

10. Carpentry tools (power tools, skill saws, etc.)

11. Flooring;

12. Curriculum and instructional practices;

13. Current industry trends, methodology and practices.

14. Plumbing

15. Electricity

16. Landscaping

17. Demolition

18. Masonry

19. Other applicable trades within commercial and residential construction

Additional Duties

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Director and other administrators as designated.

Equipment

  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
  • Use table saw, radial arm saws, and drill presses, hammers, saws, planers, ladders, tape measures, levels, etc.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to Program buildings and professional meetings as required.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to use current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

  • English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other contracted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Must physically be able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including table saws, radial arm saws, and drill presses, hammers, saws, planers, ladders, tape measures, levels, etc.
  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Requires ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, and/or in tight spaces.
  • Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work.

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License

  • HBI instructor certification, General Contractors license

Preferred Education

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Experience

  • Successful prior teaching for the appropriate grade level preferred and 5 or more years of industry experience

Job Type: Part-time (one day per week with potential to grow)

Pay: From $300.00 per day
