Histology Assistant Duties:
A histology assistant would perform specimen accessioning, file slides and tissue blocks, answer phone calls, prepare specimens to be sent to reference laboratories, accession PAP’s to send out, weekly instrument maintenance, emailing/phoning concerning order issues, recycling, discarding specimens, cleaning glassware/dishes/instruments.
- Accessioning specimens. Status recording of the collection date and time in the Laboratory Information System.
- Filing slides and tissue blocks.
- Clear communication with patients, physicians and fellow employees.
- Maintenance of the assigned work area, including disinfections and stocking supplies.
- Verifies specimens by using two or more patient identifiers. (name, DOB, MR#)
- Recycling procedures.
- Send out procedures for multiple reference laboratories.
- Accessioning PAP’s for send out.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nurse, or other histology personnel; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying coordinator or manager of unresolved orders.
- Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC and CAP standards.
- Assists with histology clerical work. Answers phones, registers patients when appropriate, receives specimens and performs pre-analytical preparation for samples including send-outs.
- Performs pending log resolution.
- Maintenance of histology instruments.
- Glassware/dishes/instrument cleaning procedures.
- Works under the supervision of a Histologist.
Histology Assistant Requirements:
- Entry Level
- High School or Equivalent (GED)
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read, write, speak, hear, and comprehend the English language.
- Medical terminology training is preferred.
