The Director of Literacy (K–5) is a central office leadership role responsible for driving a coherent, evidence-based literacy strategy across all elementary campuses. This position ensures alignment across curriculum, instruction, professional learning, coaching, and data systems to improve teacher practice and student literacy outcomes. The Director of Literacy will lead network wide planning and implementation of structured literacy practices grounded in the science of reading and aligned to high quality instructional materials.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Program Coherence

  • Lead the development and execution of the 6 to 12 literacy strategy across the network
  • Ensure alignment across curriculum, assessment, intervention, and professional learning systems
  • Oversee implementation and fidelity of adopted literacy programs including SpringBoard, StudySync, and Language Live
  • Promote disciplinary literacy across content areas, ensuring literacy practices are embedded in ELA, science, and social studies

Data Analysis and Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze network and campus level literacy data including DC CAPE, MAP, PSAT, SAT, and internal assessments
  • Identify schools and student subgroups requiring targeted support
  • Lead data driven cycles to monitor progress, inform instruction, and adjust strategy
  • Report regularly on literacy performance and progress to executive leadership

Coaching and Talent Development

  • Collaborate with Academy Directors and ELA Instructional Specialists to align coaching and instructional support
  • Use classroom observations and walk through data to identify trends and prioritize coaching and professional learning
  • Design and lead differentiated professional development focused on adolescent literacy, comprehension, and writing across disciplines
  • Build capacity of teachers and leaders to implement evidence-based literacy practices

Intervention and MTSS Alignment

  • Guide implementation of Tier II and Tier III literacy interventions, including Language Live and other supports
  • Ensure alignment between core instruction and intervention systems
  • Support schools in using data to match students with appropriate interventions and monitor progress

Curriculum and Resource Management

  • Oversee implementation of adopted literacy curricula and instructional materials
  • Ensure fidelity to scope and sequence and instructional expectations
  • Coordinate resource allocation and support based on school level needs
  • Support management of literacy related budgets, including grant funded initiatives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in education, literacy, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of experience in secondary literacy instruction, coaching, or school leadership
  • Strong knowledge of adolescent literacy and evidence based instructional practices
  • Experience with high quality instructional materials and curriculum implementation
  • Experience analyzing and using assessment data such as MAP, PSAT, SAT, or similar tools
  • Demonstrated ability to lead adult learning and manage teams
  • Experience working in urban schools and with diverse student populations preferred
