We are guided by the Quaker ideals of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship. We strive to be a purposefully inclusive community that reflects the racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and religious diversity of our city and our region.

Position Overview: Are you an enthusiastic and innovative educator looking for an exciting opportunity? Friends School of Baltimore is seeking a dedicated First Grade teacher to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will inspire young minds by teaching mathematics, social studies, reading and writing. We are particularly interested in candidates who have English Language Arts and/or Math specialization and who are proficient in utilizing technology, especially Google tools, thrive on collaboration with fellow educators, and excel in employing multi-sensory techniques to address our students' developmental needs.

Educators at Friends are expected to model and foster the habits of mind we believe are essential to an outstanding education: creativity, curiosity, empathy, reflection, and resilience. We seek educators whose teaching styles and experiences demonstrate:

  • A desire to understand diverse attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and practices and to incorporate a culturally responsive lens into teaching and learning.
  • A record of successful collaboration with colleagues, families, and students.
  • A commitment to lifelong learning, and ongoing professional development.
  • An ability to infuse technology to enhance student learning.
  • An openness to interdisciplinary teaching.
  • An appreciation for and understanding of the social and emotional development of students.
  • Flexibility, optimism, and a sense of humor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach Core Subjects: Deliver instruction in core subject areas that honor Quaker values and align with the Teaching and Learning Paradigm of Friends School.
  • Commit to Professional Learning: Participate enthusiastically in All-School Professional Days, team/department meetings, and Lower School faculty gatherings. Engage in professional development on culturally responsive teaching, curriculum development, mind/brain/education pedagogies, restorative practices, and racial justice training.
  • Craft Thoughtful Lesson Plans: Design and implement yearly plans, unit plans, and daily lesson plans that engage and meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Collaborate with Colleagues: Foster productive collaborations with fellow educators within your team/department, across divisions, and beyond. Take direction and guidance from administrators including Learning Specialists and Mental Health Counselors.
  • Contribute to School Initiatives: Play a pivotal role in advancing the School's initiatives by contributing expertise and providing a strong voice on committees.
  • Ensure Student Well-Being: Prioritize the safety and well-being of students, creating a nurturing environment for their growth.
  • Maintain an Inviting Classroom: Create and maintain an inviting classroom and learning space, including captivating bulletin boards in both the classroom and hallways.
  • Promote Social Skills Development: Encourage the development of students' social skills, supporting their holistic growth.
  • Provide Progress Reports: Offer parents and administrators detailed, timely, and engaging written and oral progress reports, celebrating the multifaceted aspects of each child's educational journey.
  • Supervise Students: Take on student supervisory duties, including Lunch, Recess, Early Arrival, and Dismissal, on a rotating basis, fostering a positive and secure environment.
  • Participate in School Life: Actively engage in the vibrant life of the independent school community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Required: Bachelor's degree required
  • Preferred: Master's degree and 2 or more years of experience in grade/subject
  • Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to understand and incorporate Quaker Principles and Quaker education into their work.
