What are the responsibilities and job description for the Thrift Shop Materials Handler position at Freeport Community Services?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Material Handler oversees donations and the redirecting/recycling of all surplus items. The Material Handler works under the direction of the Thrift Shop Manager and Assistant Manager to receive loading dock donations and divide all donations destined for the Thrift Shop, partners, clients, other non-profits or to the recycling center. The Material Handler must be able to lift 50 pounds and be able to stand for at least 4 hours a day. Familiarity with clothing brands, antiques, collectable and vintage merchandise is a plus. A Materials Handler must be willing to sort and hang used clothes and handle used/secondhand household items. A Materials Handler must be able to use the point-of-sale system and to interact with volunteers and customers in the Thrift Shop.
HOURS AND JOB SITE:
This is a 20-hour position, including every Saturday, located at Freeport Community Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Customer service: create a welcoming and appreciative environment for donors, customers and volunteers alike, including promotion of the Thrift Shop and FCS mission
- Processes donations by sorting donations into categories throughout the day
- Handles all donations with care, using proper safety techniques
- Sorts and hangs clothes
- Maintains clean and attractive sorting room
- Coordinates transfer of all donations from sorting area to shop, including pricing
- Ability to runs the cash register/POS and interact with volunteers and customers
- Performs other duties that may be necessary or that the Thrift Shop Manager may determine to be appropriate from time to time
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- The physical demands of this job require safe lifting and moving of many boxes, bags and furniture. The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions: walking up and down steps, ability to lift/push/pull equipment/supplies up to 50 pounds without assistance and over 50 pounds with assistance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee may be required to drive as part of the position.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Retail experience preferred
- Ability to identify name brands of clothing, antiques and collectible items of value
- Knowledge of proper lifting techniques
- Ability to work with others in a cooperative and respectful manner
- Ability to select quality items to direct to shop
- Ability to coordinate all repurposing of surplus donations
- The ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities
- Experience working with people of diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
- Valid Driver’s License required. Must be approved by Insurance carrier to drive
- Experience working with people of diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
- Computer experience including Square POS, MS Office, Outlook Express
- Must be available to work every Saturday as part of the regular weekly schedule.
Education/Certification Requirements: The following educational and/or certifications are considered essential:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Pre-employment checks may include SBI, DMV, sex offender registry may be completed to ensure no findings that would prohibit employment working with special populations
