Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical Fellow position in Colorectal Surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne.

This post is to commence February 2027 for either 6 or 12 months. The post will be based within the Colorectal team at the RVI.

The Fellowship would be with the advanced cancer team with the purpose of sub-speciality training in both complex cancer and robotic colorectal surgery. It will include both research and clinical exposure.

Main duties of the job

This post is attached to the Newcastle advanced and recurrent Colorectal Cancer service within the Surgical Services Directorate providing General Surgery to the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS FT. The post will be based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in the Colorectal Surgery Department. The individual will work on the specialist registrar tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level on a 1:14 full shift basis. This post will be attractive to pre and post-CCT individuals who require additional specialist training prior to applying for a Consultant post.

Research/Audit:

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • This Directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects. Due to the high volume of specialist activity performed in the directorate there is a vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged and results presented at regional, national and international meetings.

Clinical:

  • Each doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients to which he/she is allocated under the direct supervision of the Consultant. In addition he/she is expected to provide ‘cross-cover’ for all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, and administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, etc).

Teaching:

  • The Unit has Stage II and III medical students attached to it. Each Junior Doctor is expected to assist in their teaching together with the teaching and supervision of the Foundation Doctors and in all post-graduate activities of the Unit. There is a strong unit commitment to the FOCP (Foundation of Clinical Practice) programme and HBP (Hospital based practice) and all members of the team are expected to contribute.
  • The department leads many educational programs and teaching is an important part of this role
  • Opportunities to lead/further develop courses are numerous via the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre (NSTC)

Education:

  • Trainees are encouraged to question and learn from the extensive clinical activities that take place on the unit. There is a weekly journal club where trainees present relevant papers to other trainees and Consultants. There are a number of weekly meetings that provide excellent educational opportunities. These include; audit/M and M meeting, MDT.

Administration:

  • Each Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the Consultants.
  • Out-of-Hours Commitment/Pay:
  • Emergency “on call” will be 1 in 14 and will consist of providing cover for General Surgery and trauma on a full-shift basis. Each shift is of equal length of approximately 12.5 hours to allow time for thorough hand-over of patients. The on call team consists of Nurse Practitioners, F1, Core Trainee and Registrar/Clinical fellow.

Flexibility:

In line with the Trust’s core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Postgraduate examinations (RCS).
  • Full GMC registration.

Desirable criteria

  • Other relevant qualifications (CST, ALS, ATLS, CCrISP).
  • FRCS (Gen Surg) or equivalent.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Good history & examination skills
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis
  • Able to order appropriate investigations
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague

Desirable criteria

  • 5-6 years’ experience at SpR level within Surgery

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria

  • Ability to run a service and participate in management process
  • Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce
  • Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues.
