Job Summary
The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting healthcare providers in delivering patient care in a rural health clinic setting. This position involves both clinical duties, such as preparing patients and performing basic procedures, as well as administrative tasks to support clinic efficiency. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, compassionate, and adept at working in rural healthcare settings, where resources may be limited.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
• Patient Preparation: Escort patients to examination rooms, record vital signs, update medical histories, and prepare them for examination.
• Assisting Providers: Assist healthcare providers during examinations and minor procedures by preparing equipment, providing instruments, and ensuring patient comfort.
• Specimen Collection: Collect and prepare blood, urine, and other samples for laboratory testing, following proper protocols.
• Basic Procedures: Administer medications, injections, immunizations, and perform basic tests as directed by providers, following relevant state regulations and clinic protocols.
• Wound Care and Dressing: Clean and dress wounds, as well as remove sutures and staples, under supervision.
• EKGs and Other Screenings: Conduct electrocardiograms (EKGs), vision screenings, hearing tests, and other preliminary tests.
• Inventory Management: Ensure examination rooms are well-stocked with supplies and maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.
• Patient Education: Provide patient instructions and education on basic care, treatment plans, medication adherence, and lifestyle adjustments.
Administrative Duties
• Patient Scheduling and Check-In: Manage appointment scheduling, patient check-in, and registration, while verifying insurance and patient information.
• Medical Records: Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including documenting care provided, lab results, and communication with patients.
• Billing and Coding Support: Assist in medical billing and coding for insurance claims, including verifying and processing payments.
• Telephone Triage: Answer and respond to patient phone calls, address inquiries, schedule follow-ups, and relay information between providers and patients.
• Referrals and Follow-Up Care: Coordinate referrals to specialists and follow-up appointments, ensuring continuity of care for patients.
• Community Outreach Support: Participate in outreach activities and community health programs to promote health education and preventive care.
Skills and Qualifications
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a Medical Assistant program is preferred.
• Certification: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
• Experience: 3 years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a rural or underserved community.
• Clinical Knowledge: Familiarity with clinical procedures, medical terminology, and infection control standards.
• Computer Proficiency: Experience with electronic health records (EHR), scheduling systems, and basic office software.
• Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication skills and cultural sensitivity to effectively support diverse patient populations.
• Organizational Skills: Ability to multitask, prioritize duties, and work independently or collaboratively within a small team.
Physical Requirements
• Mobility: Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
• Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Manual Dexterity: Proficiency in handling medical instruments, equipment, and small objects.
• Vision and Hearing: Adequate to perform clinical and administrative duties safely and accurately.
Work Environment
This position is in a rural health clinic, where resources and staff may be limited. The Medical Assistant must be adaptable, resilient, and resourceful in addressing unique patient needs in a rural community setting.
Must be CPR certified.
