Nature of Work
An Exceptional Children (EC) One-on-One Instructional Assistant provides direct support to an assigned student with disabilities in order to ensure access to instruction, safety, behavioral support, and participation in the school environment. The employee works under the supervision of the classroom teacher, EC teacher, school administration, and related service staff to implement the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), health plans, and accommodations.
The employee accompanies and supports the assigned student throughout the instructional day in general education and/or special education settings and assists in promoting student independence, communication, social development, and academic progress.
Essential Job Duties
Student Supervision and Safety
• Provides continuous supervision and monitoring of the assigned student throughout the school day.
• Assists the student during classroom instruction, transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, electives, assemblies, and transportation as assigned.
• Maintains a safe learning environment and responds appropriately to behavioral or medical concerns.
• Assists with evacuation procedures and emergency drills as required.
• Monitors student behavior and reports concerns to appropriate school personnel.
Behavioral and Emotional Support
• Implements Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), Positive Behavior Supports (PBS), and de-escalation strategies under staff direction.
• Assists students in developing self-regulation, communication, and social interaction skills. • Uses Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or approved district safety procedures when trained and necessary to maintain safety.
• Reinforces school and classroom expectations consistently.
Instructional Assistance
• Supports instruction under the direction of licensed teachers and EC staff.
• Reinforces academic skills and modified curriculum activities.
• Assists with accommodations and modifications identified in the student’s IEP.
• Helps operate and monitor assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
• Collects student performance and behavioral data as directed.
• Prepares instructional materials and classroom supports.
Personal Care and Physical Assistance
• Assists students with activities of daily living, including toileting, feeding, hygiene, dressing, and mobility needs.
• Assists with lifting, positioning, transferring, or wheelchair mobility as needed.
• Supports students with medical or physical needs according to established plans and training.
Communication and Collaboration
• Works collaboratively with teachers, therapists, nurses, administrators, and parents/guardians.
• Maintains confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with federal and state laws.
• Participates in training sessions, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
Clerical and Organizational Duties
• Maintains accurate records and documentation related to student services and progress.
• Organizes instructional materials, adaptive equipment, and classroom resources.
• Assists with copying, filing, and other classroom organizational tasks.
Common Qualifications and Requirements Education and Training
• Must have a minimum of 48 semester hours of creditable college coursework from an accredited institution or an Associate degree as required by district guidelines.
• Training or experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
• CPI, CPR, First Aid, and other district-required certifications may be required or provided.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to work effectively with students with behavioral, emotional, intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities.
• Ability to follow teacher directions and implement individualized student plans. •
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during behavioral or medical emergencies.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and move throughout the school day.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, or assist with moving students and equipment, typically ranging from 20 to 50 or more pounds.
• Ability to assist students with mobility and personal care needs.
• Ability to safely implement approved physical intervention strategies if trained. Additional Requirements
• Valid driver’s license preferred.
• Some positions may require obtaining or maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements according to district needs.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in school classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, buses, and community-based instructional settings. The position may involve exposure to aggressive behaviors, bodily fluids, and physically demanding activities associated with supporting students with disabilities.
