Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician operates under the direct supervision of the Environment of Care Director and is responsible for performing general maintenance and repairs on facility equipment and property structures, as well as grounds maintenance.

All work will be performed in compliance with EPA, Hazmat, and OSHA safety rules and regulations.

The Maintenance Technician Is Responsible For The Following

  • Providing oversight of maintenance for the designated hospital.
  • Performing minor building, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and painting repairs as necessary.
  • Implementing preventative maintenance measures.
  • Maintaining an inventory of repair equipment and supplies.
  • Completing inspections of offices and other designated areas with the Environment of Care Director.
  • Responding quickly in the event of an emergency.
  • Notifying appropriate personnel and following established safety protocols.
  • Performing other maintenance duties as requested.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may:

  • Occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Work in environments with moderate to high noise levels.
  • Work around chemicals used for cleaning.
  • Be exposed to dust, mist, and steam generated during housekeeping tasks.
  • Work in a smoke-free workplace.
  • Spend approximately 75% or more of the time inside a building that provides protection from weather conditions but may not protect against temperature changes.

The employee must provide documentation of a tuberculosis test during new-hire orientation and annually thereafter.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Stand for moderate periods of time, with standing potentially comprising 60–80% of the work shift.
  • Sit for extended periods of time, including at least four hours when required.
  • Walk and stand as necessary to perform job duties.
  • Lift and carry items that may exceed 10 pounds.
  • Perform repetitive tasks and motions as required.
  • Hear alarms, telephones, and normal speaking voices.

Additional Physical And Environmental Requirements

The position requires:

Reaching: Extending the hands and arms in any direction.

Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hand or hands.

Fingering: Picking, pinching, and otherwise working primarily with the fingers.

Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects and materials, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, through receptors in the skin, particularly the fingertips.

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds by the ear.

Seeing: Obtaining visual impressions of the shape, size, distance, motion, and other characteristics of objects. Major visual functions include:

  • Far and near visual acuity
  • Depth perception
  • Field of vision
  • Accommodation
  • Color vision

Stress may be identified as a job hazard due to a hectic environment with frequent interruptions. The healthcare environment may also present additional risks associated with providing services in a psychiatric setting involving patients with acute and crisis needs.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY

Category II: Tasks involve potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And/Or Experience Required

Education

High school diploma or GED required. Experience in the building trades with an emphasis on life safety and Environment of Care standards in healthcare settings is preferred.

License

None required.

Experience

  • Experience operating a variety of equipment, including lawn mowers, snow blowers, and small hand tools.
  • EPA certification required.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and follow specified procedures.
