Job Description: Wellness Buyer
Objective: The Wellness Buyer is responsible for advancing and supporting the Fredericksburg Food Co-op’s mission and vision by ensuring exceptional customer service and operational excellence. This position oversees the efficient management of the wellness department, striving to achieve optimal performance in sales, inventory control, and product quality.
Status: Full Time Hourly
Base Pay rate: ~$20
Level: 3
Reports to: Grocery Manager, General Manager
Responsibilities:
- Purchasing and Inventory Management
- Oversee all operational aspects of the wellness department, including ordering, receiving, pricing, stocking, and merchandising, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in all processes.
- Orders to fill shelves and ensures a fully stocked and merchandised department.
- Perform competitive price comparisons to ensure the department remains competitive within the local market.
- Maintain the accuracy of the POS system and scale data, ensuring up-to-date product pricing.
- Maintains an active awareness of industry trends, customer preferences, and product movement and oversees the department accordingly. Work with our database, the Satori Database, and customer suggestions to create the product mix that best serves our customers and meets inventory and margin goals.
- Participates in quarterly inventory.
- Stocks product and assists with other department tasks as needed.
- Monitor and address spoilage concerns.
- Foster staff engagement with training in effective selling techniques and product knowledge.
- Execute NCG Commitments.
- Merchandising and Presentation
- Ensure that product displays are organized, visually appealing, and fully stocked to maximize customer engagement and sales.
- Maintain the integrity of shelf tags, promotional materials, and product placement, ensuring compliance with merchandising standards.
- Collaborate with the manager on sales plans and promotions, aligning product placement with anticipated demand.
- Customer Service
- Pass on relevant literature for department staff to read. Maintain selection of third party literature available in wellness department.
- Conduct training for products and trends for staff.
- Ensures excellent internal and external customer relations by modeling friendly, engaged customer service.
- Responds promptly to customer product requests and documents results.
- Develops and maintains professional rapport with all vendors and suppliers.
- Adheres to industry standards for advising customers on products without prescribing.
- Other Duties
- Actively participate in NCG programs, seminars, and conferences to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices.
- Any other duties assigned by the General Manager.

Essential Physical Requirements
- Ability to communicate with coworkers and customers
- Ability to read, count and write, to accurately, and legibly complete required documentation
- Ability to freely access all areas of the store including selling floor, stock areas, and walk-in coolers and freezers
- Ability to move, lift or handle up to approximately 60 pounds repeatedly and 70 pounds occasionally, unassisted
- Ability to move full pallet(s) of product across the store as needed, with a pallet jack
- Ability to read tiny print
- Ability to perform the following movements – used in stocking – repeatedly and for sustained periods of time: walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting and reaching
- Ability to work in temperatures below 35° for more than one hour at a time, and below 10° for more than ½ hours at a time
- Ability to work varied hours and days; i.e. early morning, morning, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, etc
