Position Overview
The Construction Accountant plays a key role in maintaining financial accuracy and operational efficiency for our multi-state paving projects. This position will manage all aspects of job costing, project accounting, and general ledger reconciliation while partnering closely with project managers, operations leaders, and the corporate finance team. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, understands construction workflows (billing, WIP, retention, cost tracking), and thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate job cost accounting for multiple active projects across divisions.
- Prepare monthly WIP (Work in Progress) schedules, revenue recognition entries, and variance analyses.
- Review and reconcile job budgets vs. actuals; flag cost overruns and margin risks to management.
- Process progress billings, retention invoices, and change orders in coordination with project management.
- Track and reconcile subcontractor pay applications, lien releases, and insurance certificates.
- Assist with AP and AR functions related to project billing, including customer collections and vendor payments.
- Support the monthly and year-end close process with detailed journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Coordinate with external auditors and CPA firm for quarterly and annual reviews.
- Partner with operations to ensure timely project setup, budget updates, and cost allocations.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives around reporting, cost controls, and accounting software utilization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in construction, paving, or general contracting.
- Strong understanding of job cost accounting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and WIP analysis.
- Experience with construction accounting software such as Procore, Viewpoint or QuickBooks Enterprise
- Proficient in Excel and comfortable analyzing large data sets and pivot tables.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both field and corporate teams.
Salary : $90,000 - $100,000
