Equipment Mechanic - Solid Waste and Recycling

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible; additional compensation to include tool allowance); full-time; 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; full benefits

This skilled position is responsible for the complex repair, adjustment and maintenance of trucks, heavy equipment and other equipment (large and small) used by the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling (DSWR). Supervision is received from the Landfill Supervisor through the Division Director.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy.  For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate.

  • Inspect, repair and/or replace heavy equipment components and parts
  • Inspect, repair and/or replace brakes, suspension parts and exhaust systems
  • Perform general tune-ups and fuel system repairs and diagnostics for gasoline systems (carburetor and fuel injection) and diesel systems
  • Use computerized vehicle analysis equipment to diagnose electronic systems
  • Repair/charge air conditioning systems; use a coolant recycling system
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems and accessories
  • Provide general maintenance care for all types of DSWR vehicles and equipment
  • Respond to off-site service calls
  • Utilize a computerized system to track work orders and complete records of work performed, parts used, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as required

The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  


  • High school graduation, or the equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years of work experience in the repair and service of heavy equipment and trucks
  • Possession of a valid Commercial class A driver's license with airbrake and tanker endorsements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Thorough knowledge of potential hazards associated with this type of work and appropriate safety precautions
  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques utilized in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to effectively detect and diagnose repair problems, and perform complex repairs and adjustments to various types of heavy equipment, heavy trucks and other equipment
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot, repair and/or rebuild hydraulic components
  • Ability to effectively utilize and maintain coolant recycling equipment, computerized vehicle analysis systems and other new technology as needed
  • Effective written and spoken (English) communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow spoken and written instructions and to accurately complete documentation of work performed
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Welding work experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Working conditions for this position may include exposure to allergens, dust and fumes found in refuse, recyclable materials and yard waste
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly stoop, kneel, crouch, lift between 20-50 pounds, lift over 50 pounds, push and pull up to and over 40 pounds, reach and make repetitive motions; frequently sit, walk, move, traverse, climb, crawl and drive
  • While working in this position the employee is required to constantly work indoors, outdoors, in hot temperatures above 100 degrees, in cold temperatures below 32 degrees, work in dirty, dusty, noisy conditions, work in confined spaces, near machinery, exposed to chemical and fumes, potentially exposed to infectious diseases and required to wear protective equipment; frequently walk on uneven ground and work at heights
  • Ability to provide the hand tools required for this work
  • Available for varied working hours and on-call for landfill operations, urgent repair to heavy equipment or other emergency situations

KIND OF EXAMINATION (may include):

3) A DOT pre-employment physical examination and drug test
