Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Fraser, MI

Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician in our ophthalmology surgical center plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our surgical procedures. They are responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment necessary for ophthalmic surgeries. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict protocols, and collaboration with surgical and nursing staff to maintain a sterile environment conducive to successful procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly clean and decontaminate surgical instruments, equipment, and reusable supplies using appropriate methods and detergents.
  • Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and ensure proper sterilization of instruments according to established protocols and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment for cleanliness, functionality, and damage, reporting any issues to the appropriate personnel for repair or replacement.
  • Assemble instrument trays and packs according to surgical procedures, ensuring proper wrapping and labeling for sterilization.
  • Monitor inventory levels of sterile supplies and instrumentation, replenishing as needed to maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, including routine testing of sterilization equipment and adherence to infection control protocols.
  • Collaborate with surgical and nursing staff to anticipate instrument needs for scheduled procedures and facilitate efficient turnover between cases.
  • Stay current on best practices and advances in sterile processing techniques through ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Adhere to all regulatory requirements, including those set forth by OSHA, CDC, and other governing bodies, to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; certification as a Sterile Processing Technician preferred.
  • Prior experience in sterile processing, preferably in a surgical or healthcare setting, with knowledge of ophthalmic instrumentation and procedures preferred.
  • Familiarity with sterilization techniques, equipment, and infection control practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with a focus on patient safety and quality care.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development to enhance skills and stay up to date on industry trends and best practices.
