Pediatric Orthodontic Assistant

About the Role
We are looking for a warm, energetic, and skilled Pediatric Orthodontic Assistant to join our growing practice on a part-time basis. In this role, you will be an essential part of our care team — helping children and teens feel comfortable, safe, and excited about their orthodontic visits. Compensation
$18–$24 per hour, commensurate with experience. Pay is reviewed after a 90-day probationary period with opportunity for increase based on performance.
Schedule & Hours
This is a part-time position. Typical hours are [2] days per week, [8] hours per day. Occasional Friday availability may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Assist the orthodontist chairside during exams, bonding, banding, wire changes, adjustments, and other pediatric orthodontic procedures
- Prepare and sterilize instruments, operatories, and materials per OSHA and infection control standards
- Take and process digital orthodontic X-rays (panoramic and cephalometric), photos, and impressions as directed
- Place and remove separators, elastics, and auxiliary appliances under orthodontist supervision
- Polish brackets and appliances, and provide preventive care guidance for patients in active treatment
- Assist with comprehensive orthodontic check-ups, including bracket placement, wire changes, retainer fittings, and digital scanning with iTero
- Maintain accurate patient records in the practice management software
Patient & Family Care
- Warmly welcome children and caregivers and escort them to treatment areas
- Use age-appropriate behavior guidance techniques (tell-show-do, positive reinforcement) to ease anxiety
- Educate patients and caregivers on proper oral hygiene and orthodontic appliance care
- Support patients through appliance discomfort with reassurance, wax application, and other comfort measures
Administrative & Team Support
- Help manage instrument inventory and supply ordering
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment
- Collaborate with front desk staff to support smooth patient flow
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1–2 years of orthodontic assisting experience (pediatric experience strongly preferred)
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Dental radiography certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
- Proficiency with orthodontic practice management software (Dolphin, Cloud9, OrthoTrac, or similar)
- Genuine love for working with children; patient, calm, and nurturing demeanor
Preferred
- Experience with clear aligners (Invisalign, Spark, or similar)
- Experience with pediatric or interceptive (Phase I) orthodontics
- Experience with comprehensive orthodontics and braces
- Experience with iTero or 3D digital scanning
- Experience with patients with special needs
- Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) credential
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
