This position is located within Engineering Service at the Hudson Valley VAMC at Castle Point, NY. The purpose of this position is the preventive maintenance and inspection of patient wards and other areas located throughout the Hudson valley Health Care facilities. May require travel to the CBOCs and each campus to perform the functions of the position description.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to:- Work involved in the maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair of basic electrical systems associated with fixtures, equipment in industrial, institutional, office and residential buildings.
- Replace bulbs, resetting breakers and replacing ballast.
- Clear stoppage in sinks, toilets, and drains.
- Respond to water leaks of any kind.
- Replace ceiling tile and floor tile that have been damaged, broken or stained.
- Respond to calls for room temperatures too cold and/or too hot (thermostat/fan coil motor/filter) as needed.
- Minor repairs to doors, handrails etc.
- Perform electrical inspection on small appliances.
- Maintenance on windows, checking and replacing parts.
- Repair and/or install office furniture.
- Receive work through written and oral instructions.
- Work with electrical components to install, maintain, troubleshoot.
- Repair/replace light bulbs, ballast, fixtures, control and switches.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance inspections and repairs on facility equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday; 8:00am to 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: The duties require considerable movement around the hospital and involves bending, lifting, work from ladders and scaffolding and platforms, both in and outside the building, and crawling through restrictive areas. The incumbent must occasionally lift equipment and materials weighting 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require him/her to stand, stoop, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat and cold, dust, dirt, noise, grease, bad smelling fumes, and moisture, as well as outside the normal indoor environment of the hospital. The work environment includes crawl spaces and narrow spaces. He/she may occasionally be exposed to disease, bad weather, possible electric shock, refrigerant gases, danger of falling, hand or power tools, danger from flying splinters and chips, respiratory ailments. He or she may have frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections, cuts, and bruises. Occasionally, he or she may be required to wear protective clothing which are sometime heavy and uncomfortable. He or she will be required to follow proper procedures and wear proper protective equipment to minimize risk.
