GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB


Under general supervision, provides direct services to those high-risk students assigned to in-school suspension who need opportunities to develop the degree of self-discipline required to take advantage of the school's academic program. Also requires obtaining a bus driver’s license and driving a school bus as assigned. Reports to the school principal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Helps students examine their behavior and the consequences of that behavior.


Maintains a therapeutic environment conducive to improving the behavior of disruptive students.


Provides orientation to each student assigned to the program.


Develops daily schedule for students.


Administers tests, inventories or assignments.


Provides assistance/supervision in helping each student complete academic assignments.


Makes available the necessary supplies and equipment for students to complete their work.


Makes referrals to counselors and administrators when appropriate.


Initiates and maintains contact with student's parents.


Maintains accurate data on the students served in ISS.


Submits periodic reports to school administrators.


Maintains a physical environment that is conducive to concentrated study with supervision of all student activities.


ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Assists in activities aimed at improving students' self-esteem.


Assists in the development of appropriate forms.


Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


Must meet the “No Child Left Behind” requirements to be “highly qualified.” Associate’s degree in education or related field and two years of experience working with at-risk students preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Physical demand requirements are for light work.


Data Conception:
Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of people.


Interpersonal Communication:
Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to students.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read forms and documents. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets.


Intelligence:
Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.


Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.


Numerical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.


Interpersonal Temperament:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average to high levels of stress.


Physical Communications:
Requires the ability to talk and hear.

Other: Requires a valid NC license to operate a school bus.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


Knowledge of child development and motivation.


Ability to work under stress and not be threatened by confrontational behavior.


Ability to be compassionate.


Ability to be organized.


Ability to interact effectively with parents and other care-givers.
