POSITION SUMMARY

The WIC Nutritionist II provides advanced professional nutrition services for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and other eligible public health programs. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive nutrition assessments, developing individualized nutrition care plans, providing evidence-based nutrition counseling and health education, determining program eligibility, prescribing WIC food benefits, and promoting breastfeeding. The Nutritionist II serves clients with complex nutritional and medical needs, collaborates with healthcare providers and community partners, and supports program quality, compliance, and public health initiatives. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the WIC Director or assigned supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments utilizing anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary information.
• Determine participant eligibility and nutritional risk according to USDA and North Carolina WIC Program guidelines.
• Develop individualized nutrition care plans based on participant health status, nutritional needs, cultural preferences, and readiness for behavior change.
• Provide individualized nutrition counseling and health education to pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, children, and other eligible public health clients.
• Assess and counsel participants with high-risk nutritional conditions, including gestational diabetes, anemia, obesity, underweight, food allergies, hypertension, and other nutrition-related medical conditions.
• Prescribe, issue, and tailor WIC food benefits and breastfeeding supplies in accordance with federal and state regulations.
• Promote, educate, and support breastfeeding through counseling, education, and referral to community resources.
• Communicate and collaborate with physicians, nurses, healthcare providers, and other professionals regarding participant care and nutrition recommendations.
• Coordinate referrals to medical providers, behavioral health providers, and community resources to support comprehensive client care.
• Maintain accurate and timely participant documentation within the Crossroads WIC system and electronic health records.
• Complete required reports, program documentation, quality assurance activities, and state reporting requirements.
• Provide technical assistance, consultation, and training to WIC staff regarding nutrition policies, procedures, and high-risk participant management.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, program monitoring, competency activities, continuing education, and implementation of federal and state policy changes.
• Participate in community outreach, nutrition education, health promotion activities, and special public health initiatives.
• Maintain participant confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, USDA, North Carolina WIC Program requirements, and departmental policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Principles of normal, maternal, infant, pediatric, and therapeutic nutrition.
• Nutrition assessment techniques, including anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary evaluation.

• USDA WIC Program regulations, policies, food package requirements, and North Carolina WIC procedures.

• Develop evidence-based nutrition care plans for participants with varying levels of nutritional risk.

• Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to encourage healthy behavior change.
• Prepare clear, accurate documentation and required reports.
• Operate standard office equipment and electronic documentation systems.

Ability to:

• Independently manage a caseload of participants with varying nutritional and medical risks.
• Interpret nutrition assessment findings and formulate appropriate nutrition interventions.
• Calculate nutrient requirements, food prescriptions, percentages, ratios, and other mathematical computations required for nutrition care.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, healthcare providers, community agencies, and coworkers.
• Adapt counseling methods to meet the educational, cultural, and socioeconomic needs of participants.
• Organize work effectively while balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Maintain flexibility in scheduling to support clinic operations, outreach activities, and continuing education requirements.
• Maintain accurate records while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local program requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

One of the following is required:

• Graduation from an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics; OR
• Registration as a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR), with a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; OR
• Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, Community Nutrition, Foods and Nutrition, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience as permitted under North Carolina classification standards.
• This position must possess and maintain a current, valid Driver License.
• Must pass a background check.
• Required vaccines: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella (Chickenpox), Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis).
• Must complete a two-step TB skin test.
• Reimbursement available for required vaccines and TB testing.

Experience performing WIC Nutritionist responsibilities in NC preferred
