GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

 

Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform administrative work and provide management for personnel engaged in all general maintenance, repair, and sanitation work to ensure a clean, safe student/faculty environment throughout school and office facilities. Employees in this classification provide directional support to maintenance, repair, and custodial staff.  The position is responsible for ensuring all work performed adheres to established safety standards, building codes and regulations, and legal guidelines where applicable.  Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Requires intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100 pounds).  Performs related work as needed.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs management duties over maintenance programs, as well as repairs, renovations, and various projects.
  • Maintains frequent communications with operations, administrative staff, and vendors in order to sustain the functional efficiency of school and office facilities.
  • Advises various general contractors, in a wide variety of semi-skilled trades, on work to be accomplished to clarify and expedite projects and repairs.
  • Reviews proposals and oversees the process of projects and repairs, to include design, implementation, product purchasing, and follow-up of work awarded to qualified contractors; Reads and interprets layouts, blueprints, and drawings.
  • Evaluates completed projects and repairs to ensure all work performed adheres to established safety standards, building codes, and regulations, and legal guidelines where applicable.
  • Responds to various student, employee, and personnel needs by coordinating necessary services to maintain an efficient and safe student/staff environment as required by institutional functions.
  • Maintains maintenance equipment and supplies inventory levels.
  • Prepares reports of various trade activities and the status of maintenance, repair, and renovation projects.
  • Attends and participates in committees and various staff and management meetings for the purpose of interactive communication and training, e.g., safety, operations, management skills, new policies, procedural changes, and departmental/facility relocation projects.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

 

  • Ability to understand, follow, and direct written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and write English: ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Expert knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, and necessary safety precautions used in maintenance, renovations, and repair work.  
  • Expert knowledge of current codes and regulatory standards governing maintenance, renovations, and repair.
  • Skill in operating basic manual and electric hand tools, e.g., hammer, screwdriver, skill saw, power drill, wrench, level, and pliers.
  • Ability to operate standard vehicles and pickup trucks.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to access, operate, and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update, and maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, supervisors, and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
  • Ability to perform intermittently physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50-75 pounds).
  • Ability to distinguish color and differentiate electrical circuitry (control and line); ability to hear; ability to smell.
  • Knowledge of basic School District work policies and guidelines; knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.

 

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / EXPERIENCE

 

Associate degree or Vocational Certification with coursework emphasis in business/facilities management; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years of responsible experience in facilities maintenance management within a lead position; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Must possess and maintain an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 

Salary : $42,781 - $88,788
