GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES


The Building & Trades Instructor will provide students with classroom and hands-on instruction in carpentry, construction, and related trades. The instructor will prepare students for industry certifications, postsecondary training, and entry-level employment in the building and construction fields, while reinforcing workplace readiness skills and safety practices.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver engaging instruction aligned to Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) CTE competencies in Building & Trades.

  • Provide hands-on experiences with tools, materials, and construction techniques.

  • Integrate safety practices in all aspects of instruction, ensuring compliance with OSHA and school policies.

  • Prepare students for industry-recognized credentials (e.g., OSHA 10/30, NCCER, CPR/First Aid, etc.).

  • Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments that align with state standards and industry expectations.

  • Supervise and manage a safe, organized, and productive lab/shop environment.

  • Incorporate employability and workplace readiness skills into daily instruction.

  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and reports in compliance with division and VDOE requirements.

  • Collaborate with CTE colleagues, business partners, and advisory councils to enhance program relevance.

  • Support students in SkillsUSA or other CTE-related student organizations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the school administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • At least four years of documented, progressive occupational experience in building and construction trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, or general contracting).

  • Ability to obtain or hold a Virginia CTE Provisional or Collegiate Professional Teaching License in Building Trades.

  • Demonstrated expertise with construction tools, equipment, and safety procedures.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to preparing students for postsecondary success and industry certifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a construction-related field.

  • Valid industry certifications (e.g., OSHA, NCCER, Journeyman License, Contractor’s License).

  • Prior teaching, mentoring, or training experience.

  • Experience with instructional technology and blended learning platforms.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience based on the Franklin City Public Schools 2026–2027 salary scale (pending School Board approval).
