Overview
Franklin Area School District is seeking reliable and dedicated Custodial Substitutes to join our team. Custodial Substitutes are called on an as-needed basis to fill in during the absence of regular custodial staff across various school sites.
This position is vital in maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for students, staff, and the community. Work hours can be up to 29.5 hours a week.
Performance Responsibilities
- Knows or learns how to use all cleaning products such as disinfectants, waxes/floor finishes, all-purpose cleaners, polishes, carpet spotter and shampoos, bowl cleaners, etc. Additional information may be obtained through the head custodian.
- Familiarity with, and use of, all types of janitorial cleaning devices such as dusters, mops, vacuums, scrubbers, polishers, sprayers, automatic floor machines, window washers, etc.
- Demonstrate measurement techniques when using all types of cleaning/disinfecting chemicals.
Physical Demands
- Stand, walk, climb stairs, use scaffolds, lifts, turn, kneel, stoop, crouch, reach, push, pull, and lift vacuums, mops, buckets, carts, dusters, trash, move furniture, and deliver school supplies. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Special Demands
- Demonstrate a willingness to perform routine tasks continuously and perform tasks despite frequent interruptions. The individual must be able to perform tasks with consideration for all personnel, students, and public entities in the vicinity. The custodian should use initiative and judgment to maintain the assigned area clean and orderly. The daily routine involves performing standardized, tedious tasks under limited supervision.
- The individual must maintain good relations with all other personnel and a neat appearance.
- Many occasions will arise to set up for sporting events, PTO meetings, teachers' meetings, and other school-sponsored or rental events. The custodial staff will be responsible for setting up the events as instructed by the building principal or the organization's representative using the facility.
Primary Functions
- Clans and services assigned areas.
- Dusts and mops room, corridors, laboratories, lavatories, stairways, utility rooms, closets, etc.
- Dust furniture and equipment and arrange them in an orderly fashion.
- Cleans windows, sills, frames, and blinds.
- Empties wastebaskets and removes rubbish.
- Cleans and polishes desks, sinks, mirrors, and similar equipment.
- Stairway cleaning inside the confines of the stairwell that can be reached from normal walking surfaces.
- Removal of gum and other foreign substances.
- Cleaning of handrails, coat racks, doors, water fountains, fire extinguishers, etc.
- Spot cleaning of walls
- Scrubs, waxes, and polishes hard floor surfaces
- Vacuums and shampoos all carpeting
- Cleans interior and exterior windows.
- Replenishes all restroom supplies, as needed.
- Cleans and disinfects shower/locker rooms.
- Cleans all light shades and replaces bulbs, as needed.
- Assists in the removal of snow and ice, as needed.
- Assists with grounds clean-up, as needed.
- Assists with the building's openings and/or closings daily.
- May be assigned in an emergency to assist a mechanic employee.
- Conforms to all fire and safety regulations
- Keeps the janitors' utility room in a clean, orderly fashion
- Responsible for the proper care, maintenance, and storage of the equipment used in their work.
- Responsible for reporting any defective equipment noticed during their duties to their supervisors (head custodians).
- Perform other duties as may be assigned.
The above duties reflect the general work performed during the regular scheduled school term and do not reflect assigned areas, etc., during student holidays and summer cleaning.
