Behavioral Support Specialist
As a Job Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Behavioral Support Specialist to join our school family team.
General Job Summary:
To develop and implement behavior support strategies and techniques to serve students in a school environment. Train school staff in use of behavior supports.
Status: Full-time, 10-month employee (August-June)
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop a Behavior Support Plan for each child who needs assistance in participating in classroom activities. Use information from assessment and evaluation instruments, appropriate curriculum guides and input from parents, teachers, therapists, and other staff members.
- Implement behavior intervention strategies to address challenging behaviors
- Utilize and train staff in approved methods of behavior management. Inform Administrative Team if additional support is needed.
- Hold regular meetings/communication time with teaching staff to discuss needs of children, supports & strategies, and develop data collection methods for monitoring effectiveness of interventions.
- Participate as requested in IEP meetings for children being served, and support team in collecting FBA data & developing BIP.
- In collaboration with Lead Teacher, present suggested IEP goals and objectives and communicate progress to parents/guardians in parent-teacher conferences and/or IEP meetings.
- Participate in all activities to maintain the school’s policies, standards, and licensing requirements.
- Participate in cooperative planning and implementation of activities, including special school programs and events, playground activities, field trips, physical fitness programs, and enrichment activities.
- Conduct weekly social skills group in collaboration with Outreach Coordinator.
- Collaborate with the Director, Assistant Director, Program Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, and Admissions Coordinator in meeting specialized needs of children and families.
- Work cooperatively with therapists in implementing program recommendations and providing evaluation of recommendations.
- Participate in weekly meetings with the Administrative Team to review information, procedures, difficulties in addressing problem areas, and reporting successful intervention activities.
- Respond in a timely manner to suggestions and recommendations made by administrators.
- Attend/contribute weekly staff meetings and scheduled parent meetings.
- Attend in-service or professional development as required.
- Comply with the school’s daily/weekly schedule of duties, and with the policies and procedures as set forth in the Personnel Manual.
- Work closely with the Admissions Coordinator to assist in the enrollment process, evaluate potential new students, collaborate to determine classroom placements.
Qualifications:
- Ability to create your own schedule to accommodate the student/needs.
- Commitment to learning and using augmentative communication systems as needed for enrolled children. Daily use of sign language is required.
- Ability to work with parents in a positive manner.
- Willingness to work with supervisory personnel.
- Ability to communicate in a positive and productive manner with peer professionals.
- Willingness to participate in a multidisciplinary approach to education.
- Keep certification active.
- Knowledge of the needs of children and families and ability to meet these needs with consistency and warmth.
Requirements:
- Completion of employment application.
- Submission of three recommendations: two professional and one personal.
- Completion of health examination and TB test at own expense within one year prior to employment. TB test and completion of health questionnaire annually thereafter.
- Submission of criminal background check and fingerprinting as required by the NC Division of Child Care.
- Certification in First Aid and child CPR, or willingness to participate in training for both.
Education and/or Experience:
- BCBA Certification, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or other certification equivalent in NC preferred.
- Experience working with preschool and elementary age children with and without special needs, families, and school staff.
- Experience coaching/mentoring teachers and parents in supporting children’s behavioral needs.
Skills Required:
· Strong knowledge of behavioral health principles and techniques.
· Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or autism.
· Familiarity with behavioral therapy approaches and interventions.
· Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with families, and interdisciplinary teams.
· Understanding of special education principles and practices.
· Compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach when working with school staff and families.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift objects weighing more than 40 pounds.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Able to bend, stoop, and reach frequently.
- Ability to physically perform the essential job functions.
Work Environment/Environmental Condition:
- Small Classroom, office, and total school environment settings
- Working in conditions that are sometimes emotionally demanding and physically draining.
- Ability to work with high stress levels from heavy workloads and administrative tasks.
