POSITION SUMMARY

The Campus Safety Monitor is responsible for the general safety of the building and the students, staff, and visitors in alignment with the Framingham Public Schools Code of Character, Conduct, and Support. This role involves monitoring hallways, restrooms, and exterior areas, redirecting individuals to assigned locations, and verifying credentials and student passes. By fostering a secure and inclusive environment, this professional ensures that the school remains a focused space for learning and growth. This commitment aligns with Framingham Public Schools’ high expectations for achievement, equal access to quality instruction, academic proficiency for all students, and closing the achievement gap among subgroups within the schools.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Framingham Public Schools seeks candidates whose background, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all aspects of education.

 

  • Educational Requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Professional Experience: Experience in de-escalation strategies and/or restorative justice is desirable.
  • Language Proficiency: Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is preferred.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITY

To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

 

  1. Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to present information clearly and respond effectively to questions from district staff, school administrators, the School Committee, and the broader community.
  2. Problem Solving: Sound reasoning and problem-solving skills to evaluate district-wide information, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and recommend appropriate policies, procedures, or courses of action.
  3. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Proficiency in integrating SEL frameworks into daily student interactions to support the "whole child," fostering a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed school culture within the building.
  4. Restorative Practices: Ability to utilize restorative justice and conflict transformation techniques to redirect student behavior, manage common-area conduct, and resolve peer conflicts constructively.
  5. Technical Literacy: Capacity to read, analyze, and interpret school safety protocols, technical security procedures, and district regulations to inform operational decisions and emergency response planning.
  6. Relationship Building & Collaboration: Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with school leaders, faculty, students, and community partners to ensure a unified approach to campus safety.
  7. Cultural Proficiency: Demonstrated cultural proficiency and competence in fostering an equitable and inclusive district environment for all staff, students, and families.
  8. Reliability, Professionalism & Composure: Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance to ensure consistent district operations. Exhibit professionalism and composure in responding to unpredictable or high-stakes situations, maintaining a proactive and solution-focused approach.
  9. Organization & Time Management: Strong organizational skills to work independently. Ability to monitor multiple radio frequencies, respond to building-wide calls, and update digital incident logs simultaneously without compromising accuracy.
  10. Technology Proficiency: Ability to operate a computer and related software, including Google Workspace and security-specific systems (CCTV).
  11. Compliance & Confidentiality: Commitment to performing all duties in compliance with state and federal laws, Framingham Public Schools policies, and collective bargaining agreements. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive personnel, legal, financial, and student information.
  12. Composure & Crisis Management: Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor during high-stress situations, such as medical emergencies, building evacuations, or security breaches.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Safety Monitoring and Documentation

  • Monitor hallways, restrooms, and exterior perimeters to identify health and safety concerns.

  • Write accurate, clear, and concise documentation, including Incident Reports, Accident Reports, and Daily Incident Logs.

  • Monitor pedestrian traffic and verify visitor credentials and student passes.

  • Document and report safety hazards or improper lighting to Building Administration and the Director of Safety and Security.

II. Emergency Response and Protocol

  • Monitor, understand, and maintain working knowledge of the fire alarm system.
  • Maintain First Responder certifications and assist with on-site medical emergencies.
  • Implement the Emergency Response Plan during disasters or emergencies.
  • Follow proper trespass procedures and handle undesirable persons without interrupting school operations.

III. Technical and Administrative Support

  • Monitor CCTVs, Life Safety Systems, and duress/alarm panels.
  • Dispatch safety/security personnel to appropriate locations in order of priority.
  • Manage the distribution of visitor badges and assist with shipping/receiving when necessary.
  • Use proper two-way radio and telephone etiquette in accordance with walkie protocols.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Mobility, Navigation & Travel: Must move about and traverse throughout the school building and grounds continuously. Requires the ability to navigate effectively through cafeterias, hallways, and perimeters for supervision. Must be able to respond immediately to emergency calls, which may require moving at an accelerated pace across campus or uneven outdoor terrain.
  2. Stationary Vigilance: Often remains in a stationary position for considerable periods of time while monitoring security desks, main entrances, or fixed posts.
  3. Sensory Requirements: Must be able to see and hear continuously to ensure student safety. This includes the ability to maintain prolonged visual focus on CCTV monitors and sustain auditory attention to multiple radio frequencies simultaneously to identify security concerns.
  4. Communication: Must communicate effectively and clearly with students, parents, and district personnel in person, via email, and on the telephone or two-way radio.
  5. Manual Dexterity & Technology: Frequent use of hands to finger, handle, or feel. Must be able to operate a computer, input data into digital logs, and utilize security technology (CCTV, electronic access systems) and basic emergency medical equipment (AED/First Aid).
  6. General Physical Strength: Ability to lift, move, and position safety equipment or materials (up to 30 lbs). Must have the capacity to safely intervene in physical altercations or medical emergencies utilizing district-approved de-escalation and safety protocols.
  7. Working Environment: Must be able to adapt to dynamic, higher-noise school environments. Ability to work in various outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, or precipitation, during perimeter checks and traffic management.
  8. Interaction & Focus: Must interact routinely with diverse stakeholders, meet multiple high-level demands simultaneously, and maintain focus on student needs amid frequent interruptions.
  9. Behavioral De-escalation & Resilience: Capacity to remain calm and professional when exposed to student behavioral challenges, volatile situations, or high-stakes emotional emergencies; ability to model and apply restorative de-escalation techniques.

  10. Prolonged Stamina: Must be capable of standing and walking for the majority of the shift (up to 7.0 hours) to ensure consistent building coverage and safety presence.

  • The performance of this job will be evaluated as per the Framingham Teacher Association (Unit E) Contract.

 

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION

 

  • This position is classified as Non-Exempt (Hourly).

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

  • Covered under Framingham Teacher Association (Unit E) Contract

  • Work Year: 197 days (Ten Months)
  • The District reserves the right to transfer personnel as needed.
