Junior High School Counselor (Grades 6–8)
Position Summary
The Junior High School Counselor provides a comprehensive counseling program that supports the academic, social/emotional, and career development of students in grades 6–8. This role includes delivering direct services to an assigned caseload, collaborating with staff and families, and contributing to a positive, supportive school environment that promotes student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the Michigan Comprehensive Guidance Counseling Program, including curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.
- Provide individual and group counseling to address students’ academic, social/emotional, career, and family needs.
- Respond to student needs and crisis situations, collaborating with parents, staff, and outside resources as appropriate.
- Consult with teachers, administrators, and families to support student success.
- Coordinate and administer building assessments; analyze and communicate results to students and families.
- Collect, organize, and interpret student data (records, assessments, interviews) to support educational and career planning.
- Monitor and support student progress in areas such as attendance, academic performance, and post-secondary readiness.
- Support career exploration, Early College, dual enrollment, and online learning opportunities.
- Evaluate and refine the school counseling program to ensure it meets student needs.
- Deliver classroom guidance lessons in collaboration with staff and administration.
- Serve as a facilitator for the Student Assistance Program (SAP).
- Organize and participate in events such as orientation, parent meetings, awards ceremonies, and transition activities.
- Assist with master scheduling using MISTAR-Q and support student enrollment and course selection.
- Support student orientation programs, testing-out processes, and summer school coordination.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including transcripts and cumulative files.
- Participate in IEP meetings and support students with special needs.
- Comply with all Board of Education and District policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.

- Maintain consistent and reliable attendance in accordance with position requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in School Counseling or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with School Counselor endorsement (NT, K–12) or a valid Michigan School Counselor License.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with staff across grade levels.
- Strong knowledge of counseling practices, educational standards, and student development.
- Effective planning, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with current technology and data systems.
- Demonstrated leadership and sound professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a secondary (middle or high school) setting.
- Ability to foster a safe, positive, and inclusive school environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and the community.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to sit; occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, and perform physical movements such as stooping or kneeling.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds occasionally.
- Must have close vision and the ability to focus for extended periods, including computer use.
Additional Requirements
- Must remain free from the use of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances while on duty.
