FVCS Summer Adventure Camp Staff
Four Valleys Community School | Girdwood, Alaska
For more than 30 years, Four Valleys Community School (FVCS) has offered high-quality summer day camps that connect kids to community, nature, and adventure. We are hiring enthusiastic, reliable Summer Adventure Camp Staff to help lead our long-running summer programs.
Position Overview
Summer Adventure Camp Staff lead outdoor, nature-based programming for youth in grades K–8. Staff work collaboratively to create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment where kids can explore, play, and learn outdoors.
This position averages 34 hours per week from June 1 through July 17, with optional additional days August 3–7.
Pay $19-$21, depending on experience
Weekly Schedule
Mondays & Fridays (½ days):
Outdoor Summer Playground Nature-based play program for grades K–4.
Activities include crafts, games, playground play, and exploring our natural play spaces.
Tuesday–Thursday (Full days):
Summer Adventure Camp is an outdoor day camp for youth in grades 1–8 that blends adventure and environmental education.
Mornings: Grades 1–3
Afternoons: Grades 4 and up
1 hour lunch break in between
Each week features a unique theme and may include hiking, biking, games, and exploration throughout the Girdwood Valley.
Camp Location
Primarily based in and around Girdwood
Potential for 1–2 days in Portage
Camps are mostly held outdoors, regardless of the weather.
Staff Training
Required: 1–2 days during the last week of May
Responsibilities
● Lead environmental education activities, games, hikes, crafts, and biking adventures
● Plan and run lessons, activities, and games while adapting as needed
● Maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive group environment
● Supervise campers at all times and manage group behavior with clear expectations
● Check campers in and out daily
● Respond appropriately to emergencies, injuries, illness, wildlife, and environmental hazards. Report all accidents, near misses, and illnesses to the Education Coordinator.
● Care for camp supplies and report damage or needs to the Education Coordinator
● Provide mentorship and support to interns
● Arrive on time and ready to engage each day
Essential Skills & Qualifications
● Must be 18 years or older
● CPR and First Aid certification (course provided if needed)
● Experience working with children in a formal or informal setting
● Strong communication and teamwork skills
● Available for the full summer season
● Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working outdoors
● Enjoys working with kids and contributing to a positive camp culture
● Ability to follow schedules and lesson plans, and improvise activities when needed
● Patience and a calm, supportive approach to youth supervision
● Must agree to and pass a background check
Preferred Qualifications
● Comfortable riding a bike and hiking easy to moderate distances
● Previous experience in environmental or outdoor education
