JOB SUMMARY

Join our dynamic veterinary team as a Veterinary Assistant, where your enthusiasm and dedication will make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and their owners. In this vital role, you will support veterinarians and veterinary technicians by providing compassionate patient care, assisting with medical procedures, and ensuring a smooth clinic operation. Your proactive approach and attention to detail will help deliver exceptional veterinary services in a fast-paced, caring environment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take temperatures, pulses, respirations, and weights
  • Assist veterinary staff with patient handling, including manual handling and restraint during examinations and procedures
  • Administer oral medications, IV under the direct supervision of a doctor or technical staff
  • Support with blood sampling, diagnostic radiology, and other diagnostic procedures
  • Maintain patient daily records; prepare treatment and lab forms and all other hospital forms as required
  • Maintain patient records by recording and reporting all conversations with clients
  • Monitor patient conditions closely, report changes promptly, and support critical care or acute care needs as directed
  • Perform routine sample collections (e.g., fecal material)
  • Prepare examination rooms, treatment areas and surgical areas, ensuring cleanliness and proper sterilization of equipment
  • Assist with admittance and discharge of patients
  • Stock and clean exam rooms, areas of the hospital and laundry
  • Communicate with clients and provide them with accurate information
  • Assist the customer service representatives
  • Learning and completing the assistant levels

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • At least one year of related experience and/or training in veterinary medicine or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to appropriately handle, lift and restrain animals safely while supporting animal patients during examinations or procedures
  • Knowledge of veterinary practices, procedures, medical documentation standards and terminology with willingness to pursue further education.
  • Strong understanding of patient service principles, including client communication and compassionate care
  • Familiar with federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA and DEA regulations.
  • Ability to perform basic skills (i.e., clean kennels, fill out forms, assist technicians and doctors, etc.)
  • Experience with EMR/EHR systems for managing electronic health records efficiently
  • Have basic organizational and computer skills.

Preferred:

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA)
  • Fear Free technique familiarity.
  • Experience with the Instinct treatment and EMR software.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Clinic experience involving diagnostic radiology or surgery is advantageous but not mandatory; training will be provided for the right candidate

SAFETY

  • Follow OSHA and USP guidelines for safety and handling of hazardous materials
  • Follow established hospital safety protocols for animal handling, controlled substances, radiation protection, bite wounds, and equipment use
  • Maintain familiarity with federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA and DEA regulations

Physical Demands

  • Stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8-12 hours per shift).
  • Bend, kneel, reach, crouch, crawl, and twist to handle patients, restock inventory, and/or move medical equipment.
  • Occasionally climb or balance and hold animals in awkward, static positions for X-rays and/or maintaining surgical postures.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds or more with assistance.

  • Frequently exposed to risk of radiation
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • The noise level is usually moderate to loud
  • Regular proximity to animal waste, biological fluids, strong pet odors, medical-grade disinfectants, and sharp objects
  • Employees will encounter animals and work in environments where zoonotic diseases could be present, posing a risk of transmission
  • Involves scheduled on-call, overnight, and weekend coverage
  • Routinely exposed to strong chemicals, waste anesthetic gases, and the physical risk of being bitten or scratched by stressed patients

Pay: $18.05 - $28.23 per hour
