Oncology Technician, RVT

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Oncology Technician to join our Oncology team in delivering high-quality patient care. The Oncology Technician partners closely with the oncology service and works alongside ERCC, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Surgery to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient care. Responsibilities include administering chemotherapy and supportive treatments, monitoring patient responses, assisting with advanced diagnostics and procedures, maintaining accurate medical records, and guiding clients with clear, empathetic communication throughout their pet’s treatment journey.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically strong, and thrives in a dynamic setting. A passion for oncology, patient advocacy, and team-based medicine is essential. Prior experience in specialty or oncology practice is preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with chemotherapy drug handling and administration
  • Draw up chemotherapy drugs
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia in accordance with state regulations
  • Recover patients from anesthesia
  • Maintain sterile technique
  • Administer injectable, oral and dermal medications
  • Give injections in accordance with government regulations and doctor’s orders
  • Administer IV fluids
  • Accurately acquire blood pressure and oxygen saturation readings and EKG tracings
  • Perform appropriate animal restraint for exams and record findings on the exam form
  • Perform venipuncture, catheterization, running CBCs and looking at blood smears
  • Obtain laboratory samples including urine and feces
  • Check laboratory values to ensure they are within normal limits and notify the oncologist if they are not
  • Prepare appropriate lab request forms and submit samples
  • Prepare specimens for reference laboratories, ship lab work, and receive results
  • Accurately acquire and record TPRs, weights, patient histories, and document all client communications in the medical record
  • Examine medical records and past notes to determine appointment purpose and identify necessary tests or procedures
  • Maintain and prepare anesthesia forms, patient daily records, ICU forms, and post-op recovery forms
  • Update patient status daily at required times
  • Enter patient status updates in the medical record system
  • Prepare supplies and assist the oncologist during examinations and outpatient appointments
  • Assist with outpatient and inpatient appointments
  • Proactively communicate potential complications or concerns to the oncologist
  • Admit and discharge patients
  • Provide client education on treatment types, protocols, and chemotherapy drugs
  • Communicate with referring veterinarians
  • Enter all inpatient and outpatient charges
  • Accurately complete prescription forms and coordinate with offsite pharmacies for new and refill prescriptions
  • Maintain controlled substance logs
  • Stock supplies and clean and maintain the oncology suite, equipment, and induction areas

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of small animal nursing care, patient monitoring and administration of chemotherapy
  • Knowledge of standard protocols for providing support to veterinarians and other staff during patient procedures and treatment
  • Knowledge of the use, care and storage of veterinary medical, surgical, laboratory and imaging equipment and instruments
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques for various instruments and materials
  • Knowledge of general office practices and telephone techniques
  • Familiarity with computer and multi-line telephone systems
  • Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology and procedures
  • Familiarity with federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA and DEA regulations
  • Exercise appropriate veterinary medical knowledge and knowledge of the hospital’s programs, products and services
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively to ensure maximum efficiency
  • Ability to work in a sometimes busy and stressful environment calmly and productively
  • Demonstrate initiative, foresight, and a proactive approach to supporting the team
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
  • Minimum 1-2 years recent experience in a veterinary specialty practice

Preferred:

  • Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program
  • 1-2 years of previous experience with veterinary oncology
  • Familiarity with Fear Free handling techniques.
  • Experience Instinct Treatment and EMR software.

SAFETY

  • Follow OSHA and USP guidelines for safety and handling of hazardous materials
  • Follow established hospital safety protocols for animal handling, controlled substances, radiation protection, bite wounds, and equipment use
  • Maintain familiarity with federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA and DEA regulations
