JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our team within a dynamic, multi-specialty hospital that includes Emergency & Critical Care (ECC), Oncology, Cardiology, Radiology, Surgery, and Internal Medicine. The ideal candidate is passionate about diagnostic medicine, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is committed to delivering accurate, high-quality laboratory results that directly support complex and advanced patient care. This role offers close collaboration with specialists and clinical teams while utilizing advanced diagnostic equipment and upholding the highest standards of quality, safety, and professionalism.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Skills
- Receiving, labeling, and analyzing samples (e.g., blood, toxic, tissue).
- Designing and executing laboratory testing in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Demonstrating proficiency in operating automated blood counters for complete blood counts, preparing and staining blood films, performing manual differentials, and accurately reporting results into the computer system.
- Operating various chemistry analyzers, documenting results in the computer, and conducting supportive maintenance and troubleshooting as required.
- Operating coagulation machines and entering results into the computer system.
- Operating blood gas machines, performing necessary maintenance, and inputting results into the computer system.
- Performing Parvovirus, Feline Leukemia Virus/Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, Heartworm, and Giardia snap tests, and accurately entering results into the computer system.
- Establishing, reading, and recording urinalysis results, including microscopic examination of sediment, and entering results into the designated urine template within the computer system.
- Possessing the ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance on all in-house equipment.
- Properly preparing and reading direct fecal smears, fecal floats, and stained fecal smears, and entering results into the parasitology template in the computer. This includes the ability to identify parasites, ova, and larvae during microscopic examination.
- Properly preparing and staining cytology samples for microscopic examination, with the ability to identify bacteria and other potential pathogens.
- Performing and meticulously tracking bi-annual microscope service, in addition to daily care.
- Reading skin scrapings and accurately identifying ectoparasites.
- Preparing samples for submission to reference laboratories, including universities.
- Scanning in-house laboratory forms into patient files within the Cornerstone software.
- Maintaining accurate records of charged tests on the computer and ensuring proper billing in patient files.
- Performing daily startup procedures and quality control checks on all machines, and logging the information appropriately.
- Stocking and rotating all inventory items delivered to the laboratory.
- Auditing laboratory charges and reporting any missed or incorrect charges to the laboratory supervisor.
- Possessing comprehensive knowledge of both in-house and reference laboratory testing to effectively assist doctors and technicians with their daily blood work requirements.
- Proficiently importing daily reference laboratory reports and scanning university results for patients.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Strong working knowledge of veterinary laboratory procedures, including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and cytology.
- Experience handling, processing, and labeling laboratory samples with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to operate and maintain in-house laboratory equipment; experience with advanced diagnostics a plus.
- Working knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, infection control, and quality assurance standards.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative, cross-departmental team to support the hospital’s mission and vision
- Strong client communication skills with a commitment to excellent patient and client care.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and productive in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment

- Knowledge of the proper use, care, and storage of veterinary medical, surgical, laboratory, and imaging equipment and instruments
- Understanding of sterilization techniques for various instruments and materials
- Familiarity with federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA and DEA regulations
- Consistent, reliable on-site attendance during scheduled shifts
- Ability to practice tact, diplomacy, empathy, and patience in all client and team interactions
- Sound veterinary medical knowledge and understanding of the hospital’s programs, products, and services
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
- Minimum 2 years recent experience in a veterinary practice with increasing responsibility.
- Skilled in animal handling, lifting, restraint, and able to stand for extended periods.
- Solid knowledge of veterinary procedures and terminology; committed to continued learning.
- Understanding of OSHA, DEA, and animal health regulations.
Preferred:
- Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program.
- Minimum of 1 - 2 years of veterinary clinical or laboratory experience.
- Familiarity with Fear Free handling techniques.
- Experience with Cornerstone and Instinct software.
