Position Overview

Plans layout, installation, wiring and power source connections. Repairs of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and power services. Trouble shooting and dismantling of facilities, wiring, equipment and power sources.

Typical Essential Functions

  • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
  • Handles hazardous, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), radioactive, and conventional waste materials.
  • Handles high voltage lead incased wiring and splices
  • Prepares sketches showing location or wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings and flooring.
  • Measures cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit, using tools such as hacksaws, pipe threaders, and conduit benders.
  • Pulls wiring through conduit, walls and structures.
  • Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps.
  • Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment, using hand tools.
  • Installs control and distribution apparatus, such as electric range or motor, and installs grounding leads.
  • Tests continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments, such as ohmmeter, and oscilloscope.
  • May be trained to perform work on high voltage systems of 220/240 plus volts.

General Requirements

  • Could be included in the temperature extremes monitoring program.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical.
  • May be required to hold certification license.
  • Successful completion of the RAD WORKER TRAINING: RAD Core Academic, RAD Site Specific, RAD II Practical.
  • Comply with site safety requirements. National Electrical Code (NEC) and LO/TO.
  • Reach for and manipulate objects, hand or power tools, materials, and/or equipment.
  • Lift and carry objects such as cable and/or conduit, instruments, tools and materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, or sit for long periods. Stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and/or crawl frequently for extended periods of time.
  • Climb, work on ladders, scaffolds, other facilities, and equipment, work at heights and confined spaces.
  • Capable to be respirator certified and wear necessary PPE
  • Read and understand blueprints and/or schematic diagrams.
  • Training for asbestos abatement and removal.
  • Normal (corrected) near visual acuity. Ability to detect safety alarms through audio and visual means.
  • Work for extended periods in low or high temperatures.
  • Pass a pre-employment background and drug-screen examination, as well as periodic random drug screens.
  • Must have 30 months of experience in an industrial setting as an electrician, or have a minimum four years' experience in related work, or a combination of education and/or training/experience that provides an equivalent background.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Clearance.
