Position Summary
Are you part engineer, part storyteller, and part educator? We are looking for a
S.T.E.M. Counselor to anchor our "Station B" science program. This isn’t a
boring classroom job. One week you will be an "Alchemist" teaching chemical
reactions; the next, you’ll be a "Flight Engineer" teaching drone physics. Your
goal is to foster innovation and resilience in campers aged 5–12 through
hands-on, inquiry-based learning.
What You Will Do
- Lead High-Tech Instruction: Teach coding (Swift Playgrounds, Blockly)
and robotics (Dash Robots) using camp-provided iPads.
- Facilitate Science & Engineering: Lead diverse weekly projects including
chemistry (slime/polymers), physics (catapults/aerodynamics), and
structural engineering (bridges).
Manage Drone Operations: Oversee safe drone flight zones, teaching
mechanics (lift/yaw/pitch) and ensuring strict safety compliance.
- Immersive Storytelling: Adapt your teaching to fit weekly themes like
"Renaissance Realm,
" "K-Pop Idol Academy,
" and "Santa Cruz Coastal
Explorers"
.
- Lab Management: Manage the inventory of consumables (batteries, craft
supplies) and ensure the safety of high-value tech assets.
- Supervision: Maintain a 1:7 counselor-to-camper ratio, supervising
transitions and ensuring a "Process over Product" mindset.
The Schedule
- Daily Rhythm: You will rotate through five groups of campers (Units 1–5)
daily. The day includes setup time, high-energy instruction blocks, and
community activities like Morning Circle.
- Differentiated Teaching: You must be ready to pivot instantly from
teaching tactile sensory games to 5-year-olds to complex logic
debugging with 12-year-olds.
Requirements
- Age/Education: Must be at least 18 years old. High School Diploma
required.
- Experience: Prior experience working with children in a camp or
educational setting.
- Tech Savvy: Comfort with iPad interfaces, basic coding logic, and
learning new hardware quickly.
- Availability: Must be available for the full seasonal term (June 13 –
August 7 2026).
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or completed a degree in Education, Computer
Science, Engineering, Biology, or Physics.
- Experience with "Maker" skills (cardboard construction, basic
electronics).
