What you will do?
As the Recreation Specialist you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing therapeutic recreational activities for children and adolescents in an inpatient treatment setting. This role supports emotional, social, and physical development through structured group programming and individualized recreation coaching. The coordinator fosters a safe, engaging environment that promotes positive social interactions, skill development, and overall well-being. This role plays a vital part in helping youth build confidence, develop healthy relationships, and gain life skills that support long-term success and well-being.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, plan, and facilitate daily recreational activities for youth in an inpatient setting, including both group and individual sessions
- Provide one-on-one recreational coaching tailored to each child’s treatment goals, interests, and abilities
- Design and implement activity plans that promote social skills, teamwork, emotional regulation, and healthy coping strategies
- Encourage positive peer interactions and model appropriate social behaviors
- Collaborate with clinical and multidisciplinary teams to align recreation programming with individualized treatment plans
- Adapt activities to meet the diverse needs, abilities, and behavioral levels of participants
- Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment during all activities
- Monitor and document participant engagement, progress, and behavioral responses
- Assist in de-escalation and behavior management using trauma-informed and therapeutic approaches
- Organize special events, outings (if applicable), and seasonal programming
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and inventory of recreational equipment and supplies
- Follow all facility policies, safety standards, and confidentiality requirements

Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Recreation Therapy, Psychology, Child Development, or a related field preferred
- Preferred two years experience working with children or adolescents in behavioral health, education, or residential/inpatient settings strongly preferred
- Knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and child development
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to lead both structured group activities and individualized sessions
- Preferred experience with behavior management and trauma-informed care is a plus
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
